Growing old in Cairo (2041-11)

Post by Fat Nige » Wed Jan 15, 2020 6:53 pm

Slowly the former juggernaut that is Cairo is beginning to turn direction by mid-May. At the end of April their winning percentage was a mere .370 and that wasn’t improved by losing their first four games in May. Winning seven of the next 11 games improved their winning percentage to .405, not much but a step in the right direction.

The change in direction is mainly due to the batters finding their swing, the pitchers are still pretty much middle of the road in the BURT, but now the Chariot Archers hitters lead the BURT in OBP, SLG, OBS, EBH and wOBA. Raul Castrejon is a big help there, living up to Cairo’s expectations and leading the way in the BURT in batter WAR. Long-term injured outfielder Adrian Young has come back and hasn’t missed a beat. He’s been slotted into left field spelling Elijah Curry who hasn’t been the power bat in 2041 that he has been in previous years. With Young back, Cairo now have three top corner outfielders for two positions, with the three of them expected to earn nearly $12.5 million, that will be a problem for the Chariot Archers who are projected to be some $10 over the cap next year. 33-yr-old Mauro Garcia is on course for his third straight 35+ HR/100+ RBI and will be a certainty to have his estimated $3.9 arbitration bill picked up.

Tae-kyun Chong started the season well going 2-0, but since then has fallen off the cliff. In his last six starts he has been tagged with four losses. 34-yr-old Gonzalo Delgado is the nearest thing to a viable pitcher in a dreadful rotation, his three wins is the best in the current rotation. If I had four viable options in Triple-A, I would change the rest of them out. Caleb Benavides in his last five outings restored to the stopper role has had a mixed time of it. In that time he’s only managed one clean outing and has two saves, two blown saves and a 1-1 record.

Young is a versatile player when he’s healthy. I used him all over the outfield and at first base in Huntsville - his range was so good, it was almost like having a shortstop at first. Good to see him back and playing well.
