Growing old in Cairo (2041-8)

Final series of April lifts Cairo off the bottom of the BURT

Cairo had a brief renaissance in the final series of April when they rolled into the home of the reigning United Cup holders, Jerusalem, and took the series 2 games to one.

In Game one the Hebrew Hammers put six runs up in the first against the hapless Leon Chavez, but the Chariot Archers kept going. Going into the top of the sixth they had closed the gap to 7-3 when backup catcher Jose Chavez hit his first homer of 2041. Four more hits that innings plated four more runs and Cairo were ahead 8-7. There was no more scoring and the visitors celebrated a great comeback.

In Game two Jerusalem started well again, building a 4-1 lead after three innings, but once more Cairo showed their ability to score runs in clumps. Four in the top of the fourth made it 5-4 before the Hebrew Hammers bounced back to retake the lead, 6-5, by the seventh innings. Cairo already had one aboard in the top of the seventh when Adrian Young stepped in as a pinch hitter, his first regular season AB since 2039, he jumped on the first pitch he saw and sent it spinning high into the night air over the rightfield fence to restore Cairo’s lead before they added an insurance run. Jerusalem closed to 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh but in the top of the ninth Cairo wrapped it up. Nathan Naylor hit a 3-run shot, his second homer of the game, and making him 3 for 6 on the game with 2 homers and 6 RBI. With Cairo now leading 11-7 the final run summed up the day Jerusalem was having, Dean Oulton lost the strike zone completely and on 18 pitches walked four batters to plate the final run.

In Game three Jerusalem finally had their way. Two runs in the second and another two in the fourth was enough to win the final game of the series and the month. All Cairo had in reply was two homers off the bat of Felix Arrojo, doubling his season’s tally, a solo shot in the third and the final run of the game when he hit another solo shot in the fifth.

So Cairo finished the month at 10-17, but only a -25 RD, and not in last place any more as they leapfrog Bagdad who finish the month with a 9-18 record, bottom of the underperforming BURT division.

I had Adrian Young when I was with Huntsville - I thought he was a decent player, but I had a crowd in the outfield and ended up letting him go to free agency. Good to see him playing again.

It’s nice to see him back after missing a year with injury
