Growing old in Cairo (2041-7)

Post by Fat Nige » Thu Jan 09, 2020 6:14 pm

Archers can't shoot straight for 2nd straight April

If the Chariot Archers fans thought last April’s 12-15 record was bad enough, they’ll all be hiding behind the sofa this year as Cairo are 8-16 so far with just a series left in Jerusalem to go before April is done. Currently trailing, not just all in the BURT division, but all of the UMEBA teams as well. It might not be as bad as it seems as their run differential is only -29. . . . it probably is as bad as it seems though.

The pitching staff is a complete shambles, bullpen arm Francisco Quintana has the lowest ERA on the staff at 4.15 while four of the 11 pitchers are 5.59 or higher. #5 starter Kantaro Masuda, who has spent the last three years in Nairobi, has already lost his job after going 0-3 in his four starts with an 8.69 ERA. He has been optioned back to Nairobi and Roberto Gomez has been recalled to Cairo to take his place. The Chariot Archers were very tempted to call up 22-yr-old Paco Munoz, Cairo’s Rule 7 pick from Madison, but at his tender age they felt he could benefit from finishing the year in Nairobi and then competing for a job in spring camp 2042. The bullpen has had a reshuffle too after blowing four of it’s 10 opportunities. Jorge Barron has been moved back into the main body of the ‘pen after blowing two out of three saves and Caleb Benavides will get another chance to clean up the backend mess with Bjorn de Rooij the only listed set-up man.

Allen Miller didn’t last long at shortstop, he’s already relegated to backup as Piero Richelmi takes the starting shortstop role. Adrian Young is finally off the IL and he will get his first meaningful UMEBA action in the Jerusalem series since the 2039 post season. The one batter who is living up to his billing is new boy Raul Castrejon who is hitting .324 with two homers and 16 runs batted in.

It will take a lot to right the ship in Cairo this year, the fans may already have to write this year off, but players are coming through the system. It may not be this year, or next, but it will happen.

Admittedly not the best month, but Castrejon is having a monster year with 1 WAR already!

I see (read: hope for) some huge victories against Istanbul coming up...

I think everyone hopes for some victories against Istanbul lol. It’s a bit embarrassing, the only GM-less team leading the way, doesn’t say a lot about us :D :D
