Growing old in Cairo (2041-3)

Not much off season progress

So here we are again, through another off season and into Spring Training 2041. It was not a very productive off season for the Chariot Archers despite another losing United Cup series. Many needed to be found but few were. When you’re looking for top-end UMEBA talent it is few & far between, most of the ones you really fancy are still dreaming of resurrecting or starting a BBA career. It is what it is as we go into the 2041 season and we just hope that the missing piece reveals itself as the BBA makes its early season cuts up and down their rosters.

Cairo weren’t looking pacifically for much in the position players department. Backup catcher Xie-li Luo had been tailing off for a few years now and the team decided it was time to non-tender him, he just wanted too much for what he returned. The rotation is still a mess, barely able to muster a set of .500 pitchers and a bullpen beset with injuries. The outfield also still needs a star defensive CF who knows how to use his bat.

The 2040 post season wasn’t all doom & gloom, the many injuries Cairo suffered enabled the team to find a few players from the minors that could well plug holes in 2041. 26-yr-old third baseman Felix Torres played his first ever stint in the UMEBA during the United Cup as a replacement for the oft injured Felix Arrojo; Torres will compete in ST camp for the starting spot at the Hot Corner and with every chance of winning it following his .464/.500/.679 slash line; he only struck out once in 28 AB’s and notched his first UMEBA home run. 27-yr-old Spanish infielder Felipe Sanchez proved to be a fairly sound second baseman during his limited time in the UMEBA in 2040. He is going into spring camp with every chance of winning the starting 2B job. Miguel Gill has been the Chariot Archers best defensive CF but he missed two months through four separate injuries in 2040. 25-yr-old Raul Castrejon was Cairo’s main off season acquisition, formally a 5th round draft pick of Atlantic City in 2034 (after failing to sign with California the year before) he had 171 games in the Rupert Horn Memorial League and 78 BBA games over the last two years. His two-year $11m contract is a bit of a gamble for Cairo given that he’s probably more of a corner OF than the CF they’re really seeking, but he’s at least as good as Gill defensively whilst being a solid .297+ hitter in his BBA Triple-A & Double-A outings. With Adrian Young back from missing 2040 through a torn posterior cruciate ligament, the Chariot Archers could have a solid log-jam at the outfield corners and once more with have to shoe-horn someone into Centre. Bungay Martin will retain his starting catcher’s role if only by default as he’s currently the only catcher on the roster. Two catchers are on their way from Triple-A Nairobi, but neither are really a long-term option. Much scouring of the Waiver and FA lists will have to take place to come up with a cheap backup option.

Who knows what the rotation will look like in 2041? No significant improvements have been made in the off season, nobody that was thought an improvement was willing to sign. So, instead a rag-tag band of Double-A, Triple-A and former 2040 rotation guys will try out in Spring camp along with 30-yr-old minor league FA signing Tae-Kyun Chong

The bullpen is in slightly better shape. 35-yr-old Caleb Benavides lost four months of 2040 but he is back in 2041 to add to the 42 UMEBA saves he has achieved over the last two years. 25-yr-old Jorge Barron & 22-yr-old Bjorn de Rooij are expected to be the setup guys after proving themselves capable in Caleb’s absence. Troy Downey missed 2040 with a torn UCL and will probably not pitch in 2041 either. After missing considerable time in 2040 with various injuries Cairo hope that 22-yr-old Jose Bruno will have a better year, health-wise, in 2041, during 2040 he only gave up 14 runs in 41 IP’s. He failed to be tagged with a W-L decision in 26 outings although he did pick up a save.
