Playing in the Sand (2040-3)

Your 2040 Pitching Staff

While the bullpen is fairly familiar to the Cairo fans, the rotation for 2040 only features two pitchers who had had any significant time in the 2039 rotation. Like the batters, the pitchers are also showing signs of an aging franchise particularly in the rotation, the bullpen is mainly in their late-20’s but all have more than a few miles on the clock.

Rotation

1. 33-yr-old Gonzalo Delgardo – Split 2039 between the ‘pen & the rotation in Cairo, giving up 158 hits in 139 IP. Posted a 10-8, 4.66 ERA record but finished 2039 in the bullpen.

2. 26-yr-old Franciso Quintana – Signed last May, he ended up with 22 starts in the Cairo rotation in 2039 leading to him to post a 6-6 record with a 4.27 ERA. 118 innings pitched brought a 83/73 K/BB ratio.

3. 35-yr-old Tony Caraballo – Tony split 2039 between Triple-A Nairobi and Cairo, 21 starts in Nairobi brought a 14-2 record with an ERA as low as 1.89, but 11 starts in the UMEBA saw him compile a 4-4 record with a 5.77 ERA. He pitched three complete games and two shutouts in Nairobi including a No-Hitter against the Beirut AAA affiliate in mid-July.

4. 34-yr-old Roberto Gomez – Roberto was a full-time member of the 2039 Cairo rotation, making 29 starts and posting an 11-7 with a 4.31 ERA while only pitching 150 innings though.

5. 31-yr-old Matt Hansen – Matt was a leading light during 2039 in the Nairobi rotation, his 28 starts brought a 19-5 record and a 2.73 ERA, along with a 0.95 WHIP & 173 K’s.

In the Bullpen

34-yr-old Caleb Benavides returns for his second year as the Chariot Archers’ stopper at the back of the bullpen. Last year he posted 22 saves with a 3-8 W-L record. In a 108 innings pitched he gave up 98 hits and struck out 122 batters.

New setup man is 28-yr-old Troy Downey, he signed in July 2038 but suffered a shoulder injury in September that kept him out seven months. Last year he eventually managed 21 appearances out of the Triple-A Nairobi bullpen, posting a 1-0 record with eight saves.

Five more guys make up the bulk of the relief crew. 36-yr-old Jose Carrillo made 61 appearances for Cairo in 2039, posting a 7-3 record with 7 saves and a 3.74 ERA. 26-yr-old Santiago Rivera made 45 appearances in 2039 (three as starts) and ended up with a 2-2 record, 7 saves and a 3.12 ERA. He struck out 100 batters in 101 IP. 28-yr-old Renzo Stefanelli was once named as UMEBA’s #1 prospect at the start of 2038, in 61 outings in 2039 from the Cairo ‘pen posting 9 saves with a 6-5 record and a 4.84 ERA. He allowed 66 hits in 83 IP while striking out 93. A rotator cuff strain late in 2039 saw him recovering most of the off-season. 29-yr-old Gurmu Icharia posted a 7-3 record with 4 saves in 53 outings from the Cairo bullpen last year. In 70 IP he struckout 85 batters on the way to a 2.69 ERA. 28-yr-old Keizo Kaneko spent 2039 in Nairobi making 21 appearances out of the bullpen and nine starts. He posted a 7-1 record with two saves and a 3.30 ERA. His top notch fastball helped to strikeout 129 batters in just 109 IP.

Looking significantly weaker in 2040 than 2039 it looks like one more chance to win it all. During the season look for a much changing face of Chariot Archers pitching during 2040 as the franchise searches the free agency lists for people who can reduce the average age of its pitching staff. It is a significant problem for UMEBA sides in that they can only sign players generally during the season as players recently released from BBA organisations will not often give up hope of catching on with another BBA team until their season has started.
