Cairo Clinch the BURT Pennant !!

September 27th 2039

With just over a week of the UMEBA regular season left the Cairo Chariot Archers have clinched the BURT League Pennant thanks in the end to the slumping form of Manama. After Cairo won the series in Manama by two games to one, the Pearls welcomed in Bagdad and lost all three games. This cost Manama any hope of catching Cairo and now they could well be in fear of their wildcard spot as a run of eight victories in the last ten games by Bagdad have seen the Kings draw level with the Pearls, both with a 74-79 record. Indeed, it will now be a very hard task for Manama to retain that wildcard spot that has so long been theirs’s. They must take their four-game losing streak on the road to two of the strongest teams in the UMEBA in Istanbul & Cairo and finish the season in Bagdad in a series that could very well be winner takes all. Meanwhile the Kings also face Cairo & Istanbul but have the luxury of playing them both at the Ballpark of Bagdad.

With the pressure now being off Cairo, it is rumoured that the Chariot Archers may well rest some of their hard working players to revitalise them for the post season. Both Abel Gibson & Ramon Garza, who will be key pitchers come that post season, are expected to miss one or two starts in the final nine games of the regular season as well as several backup hitters appearing in the field. It may well add a few losses to the Cairo tally but hopefully will improve their durability and energy in the post season.

Enrico Hernandez is having a fine post season, in 11 games he's hitting .351/.415/.405

A team already deep into their post season is the Nairobi Drifters, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chariot Archers. Currently in the ABA World Series are 3-2 down to the Luanda Anglers but return home for the final games of the series. Keizo Kaneko, 1-0 in two post season starts with a 0.69 ERA, will take the mound in Game Six attempting to get the series to a Game Seven. If he’s successful Matt Hansen, also 1-0 in his two post season starts with a 0.67 ERA, will attempt to secure Nairobi’s second successive Championship. Both pitchers have only given up a single run in this year’s post season. The Drifters really need rightfielder Devin Lee to return to his regular season form; in season he hit 31 homers and drove in 101 runs hitting at an average of .261, but unfortunately in the post season he is hitting just .161 with only two homers. With leftfielder Cliff House and catcher Bungay Martin both hitting below the Mendoza Line as well it will be hard to overcome a strong Luanda side.
