Nairobi heads for their second successive 100-win season
With 21 African Baseball Alliance games left in 2039, the Nairobi Drifters are almost certain to hit the 100-win mark for the second successive season. After posting a 111-33 record in their inaugural season they now hold a 96-27 record in their second ever season and have already qualified for the post-season, holding a 28-game advantage over the Khartoum Racers, the Triple-A affiliate of Manama. Last year the Drifters had gone on to win the World Series with a 4-1 series win over the Johannesburg Freedom, the affiliate of Jerusalem. Despite this the Drifters haven’t many entries so far in the thin volume that is the ABA record book, the only one this year so far was the July 14th No-Hitter by Tony Caraballo, once the 78th rated BBA prospect in 2029, he only made 77 BBA appearances before heading for the ABA. He now has a 28-8 record in 51 starts and is currently filling-in in Cairo’s rotation while Bird is injured. Unfortunately, at 34-yrs-old Tony has found success a little too late in his career.
Caraballo's No-Hitter this season was only the second in ABA history
The star of the Drifters though, and probably of the 2039 ABA, is probably 25-yr-old Devin Lee. Undrafted in the 2035 BBA draft, he was finally drafted by Calgary in ninth round of the 2036 draft. Winning Glove Wizard awards at CF & RF at Short Season A ball for them, he also went to the 2036 Sunshine League All-Star game and came away with MVP honours. In 2038 he stepped up to A ball, making just eight appearances, hitting a lowly .129/.171/.161, before getting the call to move up to Double-A ball. It was enough though to pick up a championship ring there, he played in the Double-A post-season but was released at the season’s end by Calgary. Snapped up by Cairo he was assigned to Nairobi where he has so far picked up MVP honours in the ABA All-Star game while hitting 29 homers, driving in 94 runs and posting 4.7 WAR to date. Leading the ABA in homers & RBI he also leads the league with 45 EBH. While Caraballo leads the league in many pitching stats, 30-yr-old Matt Hansen currently leads the ABA in wins with 16, two short of the ABA record of 18 set in 2038, as well as in pitcher WAR (4.5). He was a 2026 second round pick in the BBA by Montreal where he made 279 BBA appearances before making the final 25 appearances of his BBA career in 2037 after being traded to Wichita.
Devin Lee, while welding a magic bat, is also a pretty decent defender with an 18.8 ZR in RF this season
A lot of the Nairobi pitchers can harbour hopes of a regular UMEBA role in 2040. All of this season’s rotation has a winning record, all of them with double figure wins, while the bulk of the bullpen has a collective 16-1 record, the exception being 29-yr-old stopper Leon Chavez who has a 2-3 W-L record to go with his 21 saves. The positional batters probably will have such high hopes too, with only five of them being older than 27 but their position’s in the pecking order will be very insecure as far more UMEBA quality batters will be available than pitchers.
