The City of a thousand Minarets (2039-6)

April 18th, 2039

With around seven weeks & 40-odd games left of the 2039 UMEBA season Cairo are sitting pretty in the Burt League with a 69-50 record. A drop-off in their pace in July saw a real tussle developing with Manama but a 10-5 record so far in August has seen the Chariot Archers open a five-game gap over the Pearls. The two sides have two series left against each other, the first in Manama mid-September & the penultimate series of the whole season is in Cairo, these six games could really decide the destination of the Burt League pennant. Whoever wins the post-season battle between them (with Bagdad eight games back in the wildcard race it’ll be difficult for them to come between Cairo & Manama) will have it rough in the World Series facing probably Mumbai or Bucharest. Both these two have hit the 70-win mark already and are currently six games ahead of last year’s World Series winner, Jerusalem, who will have to really step up to even get into the final series, let along repeat.

Ramon Gaza, after 142 BBA starts, now has 21 UMEBA starts with 10 wins

Most of Cairo’s problems this year have stemmed from their pitching. With 119 games gone only three pitchers have passed the 20-start mark, two of them have 10 wins and Roberto Gomez has nine. Don Bird is currently on his second IL stint of the year. The other rotation spot has just been a revolving door with four other pitchers making starts. Closer/Stopper Caleb Benavides has 65 outings from the ‘pen but only 20 of those have been save opportunities. He’s blown six of those and also sports a 2-3 record in wins. Setup man Jesus Casas has also blown four out of 17 opportunities and is 1-4 in wins; he has also suffered with several niggling injuries in common with most of the staff, not surprising as only two out of the 13-man staff are under 30. With 22 out of the 35 players on the 40-man currently being aged 30 or over it will certainly be something GM Laverick with have to address for 2040.

Catcher William Parker has 77 appearances in the BBA for Long Beach and is now hitting .353/.415/.635 in the UMEBA

With the bats Cairo only has two sluggers over 20 homers, Aubrey Anderson (30 HR, 92 RBI) and Mauro Garcia (27 HR, 89 RBI), but another four starters have reached the double-figure plateau. Injuries have played their part here as well with Adrian Young sitting out over two months in various stints and starting SS Piero Richelmi currently halfway through a month layoff. The Chariot Archers have just signed another 30-something in former BBAer George Bluth to help fill in for Richelmi, Bluth had played for Montreal this year but also has a Landis Ring from Edmonton in 2038. Like Richelmi, Bluth has plus-plus defence at short, third & second, so when Piero’s back for the stretch run either he or Bluth will provide very capable backup most of the way round the infield. Bluth about to make his debut is the only current starter hitting below .270 but Cairo’s RD of +93, while better than Manama’s +45, is worse than most of the BANC league who have RD’s over +100.

Having have had a season in the UMEBA at the end of this season you can expect a fair few changes in Cairo during the forthcoming off-season. Natural wastage will shed some of the 30-somethings while others will find what they thought were automatic renewal contracts will not be offered as the changes are forced through. There will as always be a whole class of BBA rejects sniffing round to extend their baseball careers, but one would also think that the stars of the Nairobi Drifters would also get the chance to step up. They are approaching their second straight 100-win season in the African Baseball Alliance. Seven of those though are 30 or over as well so the changes will be visible be there as well. The Taipei Tigers in the new A-Ball Far East Baseball League are not having such a great season, but it was to be expected as nine of the roster were teenagers and only one was indeed over 22-yrs-old. The majority of those will remain in Taipei for 2040 with few earmarked for promotion. Any players added to the roster will fit in with Cairo’s edit of using the affiliate as an U23 squad.
