The City of a thousand Minarets (2039-5)

July 2039

As the season rolls into July the Chariot Archers have hit a bit of a slump. Having controlled the Burt League for most of the season a maudlin period had seen them slide off the top and fall two games behind Manama. Cairo had survived the injury of Don Bird at the end of May but have really struggled since centre-fielder Adrian Young strained his hamstring at the end of June. They have only won one of their six games since Young had headed for the IL and unfortunately, he will still be out for another three weeks. In that period Cairo haven’t got a real taking schedule except for five games against Manama. Those games could decide the destination of the Burt League Pennant, if the Black Pearls win them, they could be well away at the top but if the Chariot Archers pull themselves together and win the majority they could once more pass Manama and head for the summit again.

Meanwhile in the Triple-A African Baseball Alliance, the Nairobi Drifters were well on their way to repeating last year’s 111-win season. Leading the division by 16 games the Drifters have only suffered 20 defeats in the first 84 games on the schedule. Their top three pitchers had already got 40 wins between them and leading the way with the bat is their first baseman Leon Garcia who has already reached his third straight 20+ homer & 70+ RBI season. OF Devin Lee, newly arrived after being released by Calgary is close up behind with 20 homers and 62 RBI. A solid stopper in Leon Chevez has backstopped it all with 13 saves, no blown saves and a 0.79 WHIP.

The U23 side Taipei Tigers, competing in the newly downgraded A ball league, the Far East Baseball League, are finding it tough in a league where they have one of the younger rosters. Initially they held their own but recently have hit a wall with 13 defeats in their last 15 games before the All-Star game. Following the break they have picked up a bit going 7-5 but still find themselves languishing in third, 11 games behind Ho Chi Minh City. Leading the way with the bat is 21-yr-old Brody Weston, an 18th round draft pick in 2038 by Rockville, he had been released and picked up by Taipei. Now he has 20 homers and 60 RBI in his first ever 70 pro games, along with a FEBL SL2 player of the week trophy, a player of the month award and a trip to the FEBL All-Star game.
