The Bosphorus Insider 2041.16

The Mumbai Metro Stars make an appearance at the Grounds for a three game series with the Bosphorus. The ‘Boys will begin a 12 game road trip after this series.

Game 1- After recording two outs in the first inning, Mumbai Starter Aurelio Fernandez gave up a solo homer to LF John Garcia. Fernandez, a known hot head, had some words with Garcia as he rounded the bases. Garcia said something back as he crossed the plated. The next hitter, DH Patrick Lue, took the next pitch into his ribs and immediately charged the mound. The 180 pound Fernandez threw his glove at the 240 pound Lue and missed. Then ran for the Mumbai dugout as Lue threw his batting helmet at Fernandez (which also missed). Both players were restrained and then ejected for their actions.

The Bosphorus scored 6 runs over 5 innings then withstood a comeback by Mumbai to take the first game.

CF Hector Correa was 2 for 4 in the lead off spot scoring 2 runs.

RF Hyung-on Ch’oe was 2 for 4 with a homer, 2 runs and 2 RBI.

LF John Garcia was 2 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs and 2 RBI. He is hitting .293 with 44 homers and 104 RBI.

SP Vladimir Reichel had a good start cut short when his back stiffened up on him after the third inning. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 2 before exiting.

RP Bras Geisteras pitched the ninth and picked up his 24th save of the season.

John Garcia was asked after the game what was said. Garcia stated, “Fernandez told me in Spanish, “Corrale buey”. That translates to run idiot.”

He was then asked what his response was. He said, “I told him in Spanish, “Ya me voy a casa, pendejo!”. In English it means, I’m going home, asshole!”


Final score: Istanbul wins 6-4.

Game 2- The Bosphorus score 8 runs over five innings and led 8-1. Then the bullpen came on in relief of a strong start by SP Charlie Simmons and gave up 2 runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth. RP Bras Gesteiras stopped the bleeding in the ninth allowing just 1 hit and striking out 2 in earning save 25.

3B Ken Pike had a triple in 4 at bats and drove in 2 runs. and scoring 1.

SS Jose Lopez was 2 for 3, single, double and a walk. He drove in 1 and scored 1.

Simmons allowed just 1 run in his 5 innings of work. He struck out 6 and walked 2. He improved to 11-3 with a 4.14 ERA on the season.


Final score: Istanbul wins 8-7.

Game 3- Mumbai avoids the sweep as they send out 3 pitchers that allow just 2 runs on 2 hits as they crush the Bosphorus 9-2. Metro Star SP Ramon “Pizza” Hernandez spun 4 innings of shutout ball allowing 1 hit, a walk and struck out 5.

DH Bai-luo Jiu led the way for Istanbul going 1 for 4 with a double that drove in a run.

SP Ramon Negron was horrible pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 2 in 80 pitches. He fell to 5-3 with a 4.13 ERA.

Final score: Mumbai wins 9-2

Istanbul wins the series 2-1 and improved to 67-53 and led Manama by 12 games on August 18.

Mumbai fell to 55-65 and 18 games games back of the Bucharest Impalers.


Istanbul makes the short trip to Jerusalem for a three games series with the Hebrew Hammers.

Game 1- Istanbul led 3-2 before giving up 4 runs in the seventh and eighth innings and getting Hammered in Jerusalem to start the series. Walks by relievers and errors in the middle infield did in the Bosphorus.

Jerusalem C Antonio Robles was the star for the Hammers as he was a one man wrecking crew. He was 3 for 4 with a Grand Slam, 2 runs and 7 RBI. He is hitting .311 with 35 dingers and 82 RBI.

2B Juan Rodriguez was the lone bright spot for Istanbul going 3 for 4 with a run scored.

SP Luis Tavares was cruising until the seventh when the wheels fell off for him. He pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and a walk while striking out 4.


Final score: Jerusalem wins 9-2.

Game 2- RF Hyung-on Ch’oe and DH Rich Ayers each homer while SP Francis Wiles and 3 relievers get the job done as Istanbul bounces back with a win to tie the series.

Ch’oe was 3 for 5 with the homer, 2 singles and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drive in the 1.

Ayers was 2 for 5 with a single and a homer with a run and 2 RBI.

Wiles pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits and 3 walks, He struck out 4 improving 13-9 with a 3.68 ERA this season.


Final score: Istanbul wins 7-1.

Game 3- 2B Juan Rodriguez homers and goes 2 for 3 and SS Jose Lopez doubled in Rich Ayers with the lead run as the Bosphorus take the rubber game and the series.

Lopez was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

LF John Garcia was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

1B Bao-luo Jiu was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

SP Vladimir Reichel still suffering from back spasms gave it all he had pitching 4 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3 in a no decision.

RP Bras Gesteiras pitched a clean ninth for his 26th save this season.


Final score: Istanbul wins 5-4 and wins the series 2-1.

Istanbul was 69-54 on August 22nd and led Manama by 13 games.

Jerusalem fell to 60-63 15 games back of Bucharest.

Ha! As the guy who originally signed Fernandez to Mumbai, I can tell you he's … pretty much an a-hole. Talented. But an a-hole …

Nice roundup, James! Good to see Istanbul regaining its mojo.
