Istanbul continues the long road trip with a three game series vs the BANCROFT Leader Bucharest.

Game 1- After falling behind 5-0 it took Istanbul 4 2/3 innings to chase Bucharest Starter Jorge Ortizwith five runs in the top of the fifth. The big hit was a 3 run double by C Anibal Garcia. Garcia drove a 2-2 fastball off the wall in right center scoring Hector Correa, Kazuo Yamamoto and Juan Rodriguez.

With Istanbul leading 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh RP Nadir Akili picked a bad time to miss over the middle. Impaler SS Brian Sullivanturned around an Akili 1-0 fastball and deposited it in the right field bleachers tying the game at 7 apiece.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the tenth. Istanbul RP Bras Geisteras came on to extend the game. The first batter, Byron Hearle, worked a walk. Next up, CF Roberto Lopez doubled to right leaving runners on second and third with no outs. 3B Jeffrey Cunningham worked the count and got the pitch he wanted singling down the third base line and sending Hearle to the plate with the winning run.

Correa was 2 for 5 with a run scored.

Yamamoto was 3 for 4 with a run and 2 RBI.

Garcia was 1 for 4 with the 3 RBI.

Final score: Bucharest wins 8-7

Game 2- Bucharest pitching holds the Bosphorus to 4 hits and 2 runs while SS Brian Sullivan hits a three run homer to dominate Istanbul.

LF John Garcia went 1 for 4 hitting his 29th homer of the season.

3B Ken Pike doubled in three at bat and scored a run.

CF Hector Correa was 2 for 4 with a RBI.

SP Brendan Carr struggled through 7 innings of work allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 in 103 pitches. He falls to 5-6 on the season with a 5.71 ERA.


Final score: Bucharest wins 5-2.

Game 3- This game saw Istanbul score early before Bucharest answers in the third to tie the game at 1. Istanbul then scored 2 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 5-1. Bucharest crept closer scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before exploding for 5 runs in the seventh to take a 8-5 lead.

Istanbul made a comeback in the ninth. 3B Ken Pyke led off the ninth with a triple and scored on a 6 -3 ground out. Hector Correa followed with a 5-3 ground out leaving Istanbul with 2 outs and no one on. That is when the rally started.

2B Juan Rodriguez walked and scored on a clutch John Garcia double to right center. After a pitching change Kaz Yamamoto singled just over the shortstop to score Garcia and tie the game up.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the twelfth. RP Charlie Simmons gets two quick strikes Bucharest 2B Ivan Castillo after two foul balls. Then he hits a worm burner to 3B Ken Pyke who boots the ball and makes no throw putting Castillo on first. Bucharest 3B Jeffrey Cunnigham sacrificed Castillo to second.
Simmons then gave DH Fernando Renteria an intentional walk. Bucharest sent in Mike Franklin pinch run for Castillo at second. Then on the first pitch, LF Saikaku Aokilaces the Simmons offering to left center field scoring Franklin and completing the sweep of the Istanbul Bosphorus.

Pyke led the team going 3 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. He is hitting .304 with 6 homers and 32 ribbies.

RF Hyung-on Ch’oe was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, a run and 2 RBI.

Garcia was 2 for 5 with 2 runs and an RBI.

SP Francis Wiles pitched 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 2 in 88 pitches.


Final score: Bucharest wins 9-8 and sweeps the series.

Istanbul falls to 51-33 on July 8th leading Manama by 12 games.

Bucharest improves to 52-32 leading Beirut by 11 games.


Istanbul flies in Beirut early to enjoy the off day in the Paris of the Middle East before a three game series vs Beirut.


Game 1- The Istanbul Bosphorus Hitters homer 4 times and SP Vladimir Reichel pitches 7 strong innings as Istanbul ends their 5 game losing streak.

LF John Garcia (1 for 4),1B Kaz Yamamoto (1 for 2), 3B Ken Pyke (1 for 4) and DH Rich Ayers homer to lead the offense.

Reichel allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 6 in just 95 pitches. He improves to 5-2 with a 3.20 ERA.

RP Bras Geisteras pitched the ninth earning his 17th save issuing just 1 walk.


Final score: Istanbul wins 5-2.

Game 2- After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, Beirut scores 12 unanswered runs. Beirut Cedar SP Abel Gibson pitched 7 innings allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 6 Bosphorus Hitters in exactly 100 pitches. He improved to 6-6 with a 3.91 ERA.

DH Rich Ayers was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk with a run scored.

C Anibal Garcia was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

SP Bernardino Bertoletti was rocked again g throwing just 2 1/3 innings and was hammered for 7 runs on 6 hits and a walk. 2 of those 6 hits were homers. Bertoletti is 4-6 with a gaudy 6.39 ERA this season.


Final score: Beirut wins 12-1.

Game 3- SP Ramon Negron took care of business in the rubber match pitching 7 innings and allowing just 2 runs. He gave up 5 hits and issued 3 walks against 2 strikeouts. He improved to 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA.

RP Charlie Simmons pitched 2 clean innings striking out 1. He lowered his ERA to 3.56.

LF John Garcia homered once gain and has hit 31 on the season.

Backup C Ignacio Marrero made the most of his rare start going 1 for 3 with a homer. He drove in 2 runs and walked once. He has 4 homers and 9 RBI in limited action.

3B Ken Pyke was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Pyke is hitting .307 with 7 homers and 35 RBI.


Final score: Istanbul wins 6-2 and wins the series 2-1.

Istanbul is 53-34 on July 12th and leads the BURT League by 12 game over the Manama Pearls.

Beirut is 42-45 and trails Bucharest by 11 games in the BANCROFT League.
