Instanbul played a three game wrap around series with the Beirut Cedars at the Grounds.

Game 1- Istanbul allowed 2 runs in the first after a RF Carlos Torres single. Torres advanced to second on a passed ball and then to third on a groundout to 1B. Torres scored on an Antonio Baca single. Baca scored later in the inning on a sac fly by 1B Oliver Ruiz.

Istanbul fights back with 1 in the fourth and 2 in the fifth sparked by aLF John Garciahomer.

With Istanbul up 3-2 in the top of the seventh the Cedars score 3 runs, chasing SP Brendan Carr. The last straw came on a 2 run homer off the bat of Torres.

Carr pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and no walks while striking out 1.

Garcia was 1 for 3 with that homer and a walk. He is hitting .314 with 17 homers and 49 ribbies.

CF Hector Correa was 2 for 3 with a single and a double, an RBI, a walk and a SB.

Final score: Beirut wins 5-3.

Game 2- Istanbul fights back with a good pitching performance by SP Francis Wiles. Wiles pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. He allowed just 4 hits and struck out 6. He improved to 6-4 on the season with a 3.41 ERA.

The Bosphorus had 3 key homers. One each from 1B Kazuo Yamamoto (2 for 4, 2 RBI), DH Patrick Lue (1 for 5, 3 RBI) and 2B Moromao Hirose (1 for 3).

Final score: Istanbul wins 7-2.

Game 3- Beirut struck quickly in the first scoring 5 runs enroute to a no doubt victory. Cedar RF Ramiro Marino led the 18 hit barrage going 4 for 5 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. CF Maximo Quezada was 3 for 5 with a homer. He scored 3 runs and drove in 1.

Istanbul Starter Bert Hackworth took the beating. He pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing 8 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits and no walks. He falls to 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA.

Yamamoto homered again going 1 for 5 in the loss.

Final score: Beirut wins 12-6

Beirut wins the series 2-1 and improves to 31-26 on the season first place in the BANC as of June 3.


Instanbul enjoyed an off day on Tuesday before beginning a 3 game series with Mumbai at the Grounds.

Game 1- Mumbai shuts out Istanbul Mumbai shuts out Istanbul on a shut out by SP Aurelio Fernandez. The Metro Star pitcher allowed just 2 hits and mowed down 12 Bosphorus hitters with 110 pitches. He is now 7-2 with a 3.29 ERA.

LF John Garcia and 3B Ken Pike provided the only resistance for Istanbul, both going 1 for 3.

Final score: Mumbai wins 4-0.

Game 2- Istanbul changed the story in the second game as SP Vladimir Reichel and 2 relievers combined to shutout the Metro Stars at the Grounds. Reichel pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing just 2 hits and 2 issuing 2 walks. He struck out 8 in earning his 4th win of the year. Carr pitched 2 innings of relief giving up just 1 hit and striking out 1. RP Claudio Escobedo recorded the final 2 outs of the game on strikeouts.

RF Rich Ayers was 3 for 4 with a homer and a double, 2 runs and 2 RBI.

CF Correa was 2 for 4 with a homer.

Final score: Istanbul wins 7-0.

Game 3- In the rubber game vs the Metro Stars, Istanbul score 3 times in the second and third innings before opening the flood gates in the fifth. Istanbul scored 8 runs to put the game way out of reach. The big hit in the fifth was the grand slam by DH Patrick Lue. Lue was 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 4 RBI. 3B Pyke was 4 for 4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in 2. 2B Hirose was 1 for 4 with a double, a run scored and 4 RBI.

SP Frank Wiles had another good start going 7 2/3 innings allowing no runs on 3 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 8 in 110 pitches (65 strikes). He is 7-4 with a 3.05 ERA.

RP Jose Espinoza pitched the final 1 1/3 innings striking out 3.


Final score: Istanbul wins 14-0 and wins the series 2-1.

Istanbul is 39-21 and leads in the BURT by 9 games over the Manama Pearls as of June 7th.
