Manama musings 2.0

Post by jjw » Thu May 05, 2022 5:46 pm

Whelp, it's the post-season once more, and once more the Manama Pearls are meeting the Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers in a best of 7 series for the Burt League title, just as they did last season. But this season it's the Hammers who are in the driver's seat, having finished 10 games ahead of the wild card Pearls, and who have dominated the Burt for the past two months while the Pearls basically collapsed, going from a 5 game advantage to far back in second place.

Pitching was the story with both clubs. The Hammers pitching, which was always quite good, got even better, and the Pearls pitching more or less fell apart. The starting rotation had to be changed every week, it seems, and hurlers who had been brilliant in April and May became sad shadows of themselves. Injuries -- as has been documented in these musings -- certainly did not help, but poor performances from the healthy were really to blame.

And to make matters... what, more disappointing? Patrick Strolz's drive to hit .400 fell short in the final two weeks, and he ended up at .384. Now, this was far ahead of Quinn Greene (from the Bancroft League's Athens Fighting Centaurs) .346 mark, so there is actually no real reason for disappointment here. Moreover, the Pearls Taylor Barfoot led the Burt League in home runs with 40, finishing second in the Association to Greene's 47, and Barfoot also led the entire Association in RBIs with 126. And then Strolz also led the Burt in OBC and OPS, with teammates Socrates 'The Philosopher' Kazantziakis ending up just behind him in the league in OBP and Barfoot in OPS. Finally, Kazantziakis ended up with the highest Burt WAR, at 6.5 compared to Strolz at 5.0. Hitting for both power and average was plainly not an issue with Manama!

Predictions for the playoffs? To be honest, with pitching so important in the post season Manama management recognizes their team has little chance against Jerusalem. But perhaps the hitting will remain be first rate -- good enough to do serious damage against the brilliant hurlers of the Hammers -- and perhaps the Pearls own shaky staff can come up with some great performances for a change, and perhaps the bullpen can make any Manama leads stand up. Perhaps......
