Manama Musings 2.0 09.09.21

With new management taking over the Pearls in the off-season, it has taken some time to discern the team's real strengths and weaknesses, and especially what to do about them. After a series of very good seasons, Manama fell back in 2047 to the .500 level, -- so are the Pearls now just another mediocre club in the UMBEA, fated to remain out of contention? But can we say anything definitive only some three weeks into the '48 season? Well, maybe -- and also maybe.
The Pearls certainly looked bad in the Spring Training games, with the league's worst record by far (9-15). Management felt these games were not that revealing, however, as the club needed to see what a rather large number of young players could do and cautioned both fans and the media against drawing any firm conclusions from the team's poor Spring performance. The first three weeks of the regular season produced results that were certainly an improvement on the Spring but otherwise mixed: a 9-8 record, with mediocre pitching, decent defense, and quite poor hitting. There were a few standout performances. Newcomer Mike England, signed as a free agent over the Winter and installed as the Pearls second baseman, had nice numbers: 302/413/491. First baseman Jack Nichols was even better: 362/387/569, leading the club in RBIs with 11. Third baseman Kinfo Luguno had three homers to lead in that category, but his 259/305/500 batting was otherwise disappointing. And these three were the veterans in the lineup, along with experienced catcher Leonardo Corral (255/255/383 -- does Corral know how to take a pitch now and then?) and left fielder Joshua Koa, who is the biggest disappointments so far after a nice 2047 season where he slugged 33 HRs
