The number 27 is a big deal in the annals of UMEBA history. In 2039, 3B Toshio Taguchi set the UMEBA hitting-streak record, at 27 games, that has only been tied once by LF Elijah Curry in 2042. In the upcoming week, the Manama Pearl's own second baseman Divino Pedrulho seeks to be the third UMEBA player in history to reach 27, and possibly break into uncharted territory and be the man on top of the hill.
"I hear the buzz," Pedrulho finally admitted after a few days of questions from reporters. "If I am being honest, I do think about it all the way until I see my first pitch of the game. After that first pitch, I kind of blackout to the outside world, and the only thing that is important to me is seeing that ball come out of the pitcher's hand and into my bat."
Even though Pedrulho is knocking on the door of UMEBA history this week, the streak tends to take a backseat to just how much attention CF Joshua Koka is getting with his incredibly hot start to the 2043 campaign. Koka has played in all 17 games and slashing .391/.474/.766, with 7 HR and 15 RBI. Koka has an interesting take on why his bat has come alive so early this season, "Honestly, I'm doing this for Divi [Pedrulho]. I'm trying to divert all you guys, the press, to me, so he can focus on hits and not the added pressure," Koka says with a laugh. (Koka and Pedrulho have accounted for 29 of the team's 94 RBI so far)
And despite the leading stories are about the Pearls' bats, the team's opening month belongs to the Pearls' pitching. So far in the 2043 season, the Pearls are off to their best start in franchise history after 17 games (10-7), relying heavily on their league leading ERA, Runs Allowed, and Home Runs allowed.
The Pearls will have one last game in Beirut against the Cedars, then head over to Libya to play the 7-10 Generals in a 3-game series, and finally come back home to play the 6-10 Mumbai Metro Stars as Pedrulho looks to reach that magic number of 27 against some favorable pitching over the next week.
