The Manama Papers, Issue 6, 2039

Second hitter, rookie of the month gongs for Trujillo do not mask wider team struggles
-Adbulwahib al-Sakir
Manama, Bahrain, 10/6/2039, 13:42AST

Current Pearls' Record: 34-28, 3 GB
Run Differential: +33

The Manama Pearls' mediocre form of late has continued, but don't tell 1B Sandro Trujillo. The young first basemen has continued to mash, picking up both hitter and rookie of the month awards for May to join his April accolades. His May line ran .429 BA, with 5 HR, 21RBI and 16 runs. For the season, Trujillo is slashing .350/.416/.635 for a 1.051 OPS. By most metrics, he is the third most productive hitter in the league, behind Jerusalem star RF/LF David Hall and Mumbai's 3B/1B Toshio Taguchi. Within the Burt League, he is miles ahead of competition in ever major offensive metric not involving stealing bases - though he has managed to swipe one bag, so he's not hung a bagel in that category either!

However, outside Trujillo's stellar form the Pearls' have crashed back to earth. Their pitching continues to lead the league, but is no longer as lights out as it was in April, with their edge to their rivals dissipating by the day. That said, LHP Gonzalo Fajardo is second in ERA with 2.84, whilst new closer LHP Jose Rodriguez leads to the league in saves with 13 (none blown), despite spending the first two weeks of the season in a setup role. Outside of Trujillo, there are no standout hitters on the Manama roster, take 1B Scott Hoover, who is slashing .346/.375/.519 for a .894 OPS in 26 games size since his call up from ABA Khartoum. Also above the .800 OPS mark in a small sample size is the injury battered RF/LF Rhys Nornabell, who's managed a .305/.374/.503 line for .877 in the 45 games he has appeared in thus far this year.

In an effort to fix problems with the outfield, which outside of Nornabell has been a little below the grade for offensive production, OF Juan Trevino has been optioned to Khartoum, with waiver claim from Bucharest OF Travis Lara taking his place on the roster. Mr. Lawton said through his 19 limited appearances in Bucharest Lara had been producing at much better levels than everyone on the team take Trujillo. He's also more defensively versatile, and a right handed bat, only the second in the outfield at the team's disposal, joining OF Damien Mayne.

Despite their various struggles, the Pearls are still secure in the Burt League's wildcard slot, with a 6.5 game lead on Baghdad, and their breath remains relatively hot on the neck of Cairo ahead of them. Their is relief amongst fans, players and staff that Manama are not in the shark's pool of the Bancroft League, where three teams are over .500, and one of them, Jerusalem, is 4 games out of a playoff slot despite this.
