Pearls of Wisdom- New Era, Same Standard of Excellence

Post by hetz23 » Sun Nov 08, 2020 9:23 am

Let’s start with a secret I want to share. Months before I had my first conversations with Mr.Cunningham about joining their team in Manama, they already had me sold.

There wasn’t much to talk about. Oh, I guess we had to get to know each other a little. I had to learn about the inner workings of the UMEBA. And I had to make a positive impression, at least to a point. If I could avoid speaking in tongues, I’d be OK. And before any of this could become a reality, we’d have to engage in the formality of a contract negotiation.

Let me put it this way: I didn’t need to retain Scott Boras to hammer this one out. The ownership group and the fine work done by my predecessor to set this franchise up for long term success had me ready to sign at “Hello.”
Here’s why: I was already on board.

I've been following the organization for months knowing of this potential opportunity. The Manama Pearls were presenting an opportunity to do something so damned good and fresh and unusual … I wanted the job.

I was pleasantly impressed by the staff. The leadership was ambitious. Mediocrity wouldn’t do. The lineup is good, yes, but this was about building an organization with a vision to become a model for the professional sports world.

I immediately fell in love with The Manama Pearls. I know that sounds mushy, and you may dismiss me as a phony for saying it … but I swear it’s true. Managing a baseball organization, it’s a lifelong passion. It’s in your soul. It will not leave.

*** This space will alternate between reports written by the GM, Ryan Hetzer (me), and through columns written by a fictional beat writer/columnist. You'll meet him soon!

If you ever get lonely at night, the team secretary will sleep with you. Get on her good side and she will sabotage other teams, even.
