An article about the highest earner on each team of the GBC.
Athens Fighting Centaurs.
Travis Wearne. $10,500,000.
Played for the Sydney Sharks and Sao Paulo Pilots last season before becoming a Free Agent when Athens stepped in to make him their highest paid player.
Found himself being traded in 2061 by the Sydney Sharks to the Sao Paulo Pilots, along with $390,000, in exchange for SP Chris Boyer, 1B José Crespo, and 1B Andreus Papatamelis.
Less than a year later he returned to the Sao Paulo Pilots from the Sydney Sharks and along with CL Bryan Hall, RP Slawomir Trzcinski, and $2,000,000, in exchange for RP Manny Costello, SP Sebastian Seabert, RP Derry Vacher, and RP Will Griffin.
The Pilots had him playing mostly in the bullpen on his return, recording an 11-2 record with a 3.47 era. Where he'll fit in with Athens is a bit of a mystery although his Spring Training appearances point to a Starting Rotation berth.
Buenos Aires Brisas.
Ira Patterson. $20,000,000.
Ended his 4 year stint with the Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers at the end of last season when he became one of the most sort after Free Agents, Buenos Aires swooped in to make him not only the highest Brisas player but the highest paid player in the GBC at this moment in time.
Buenos Aires will be hopeful that Patterson will put up the numbers he did with the Hammers the past few seasons, however he's moving out of a ballpark that suited him into a ballpark that suits his talents to a lesser extent.
Cairo Pharaohs.
Blair Peyton. $16,000,000.
A Cairo Pharaohs stalwart in this his 10th season for the Cairo ball club, drafted with the 5th pick of the 2049 Draft, Peyton as been a loyal servant ever since.
With only 44 Home Runs in his tenure in the GBC Peyton isn't relied upon for his power, he's called upon to keep the ball moving.
A nickname of Breezy gives you an idea on the speed on the base paths especially his stealing ability, an ability that have him 94 steals last season to claim the single season record but also owning the top 4 single season records. It also took him above Zephyr Orphanides in career stolen bases within the GBC.
Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers.
Ted Benson. $6,000,000.
Coming over from the BBA a couple of years back many GBC fans were questioning the nickname of "Long Ball" and were it had come from, with only an average of 16 Home Runs in his 10 seasons within the BBA. 90 Home Runs later and nobody is questioning the nickname now.
Benson takes over the mantle of Ira Patterson as the highest paid Hebrew Hammers player, as the home run threat on the Jerusalem team he'll be hopeful that Jerusalem replace Patterson with an on base threat as Patterson was.
Johannesburg Gold.
Max Dawe. $10,300,000.
Max Dawe as led an interesting baseball career, it seems as though everyone wants him but nobody wants him, well the Sao Paulo Pilots and the Athens Fighting Centaurs fall into that category at least.
In 2061 he was traded by the Athens Fighting Centaurs to the Sao Paulo Pilots, along with C Sulayman Sami and SS David Padilla, in exchange for RP Anssi Karvinen, RP Rajah Davi, 1B Michael Bayer, SP Ferit Koprulu, and RP Mesut Birdal.
Then in early 2062 he was traded by the Sao Paulo Pilots back to the Athens Fighting Centaurs, along with RP Esteban Galván, RF Hirokumi Morita, RF Jason Calhoun, RF Gerald Gray, RF Luis Urbina, RP Guy Mickle, RP Matthew Orr, RP Miguel Rickey, and RP Héctor Rivera, in exchange for 3B Aidan Reijnen, SP Beni Ihilani, RP Dale Dyke, SP Héctor Bernard, RP Kerehi Deli, and SP Yoshinori Sato.
Then later in 2062 he was again traded by the Athens Fighting to the Sao Paulo Pilots, along with RF Haydar Ihsanoglu, 2B Marco Skinner, SP Stanley Kowalski, LF Du Wu, 3B Pang Zou, C Njoroge Akins, CF Hak-joon O, RF Drew Tsembelis, and SS Bryce Lidstone, in exchange for SP Pete Morris, SP Eric Gee, 1B Dave Marceau, RF Carl Torraville, 1B Orlando Muñóz, 1B John Siegfried, SP Álex Vázquez, RP Rahimat bin Nuri, SP Sarsour bin Salman, and SP Austin Kimpton.
Only time will tell if the Johannesburg Gold trade him or he sticks around.
London Monarchs.
Rick Clarijs $12,000,000.
Started his career in the BBC or the UMEBA as it was called back then, even winning a championship ring with the Tokyo Pearls in 2051, Clarijs decided to try his luck in the BBA but after bouncing around with the Vancouver Mounties, Charlotte Flyers, Twin Cities River Monsters, Sacramento Mad Popes and finally returning to the Mounties last season.
The Monarchs splashed $21,000,000 on a 2 year deal in Free Agency, over his career Clarijs was used both in the rotation and bullpen, although it's likely that he'll start in the rotation. For the money they've paid they'll be hopeful he sticks in the rotation.
Moscow Thunder Bears.
Samuel Vankrimpen $6,000,000.
Vankrimpen hadn't started a game since his college days with the Sydney Wallabies but the Moscow Thunder Bears saw something even the BBA Nashville Bluebirds never saw, they saw a starter even though his arsenal consists of only 2 pitches. An average fastball and an above average curveball.
With his 2 pitch arsenal Vankrimpen as started 66 games since joining the Moscow ball club in 2060 winning 22 as a starter and he's only getting better with more wins last year (12) than the previous year (10), his innings have gone up slightly 202.1 from 194.1 and his era dropping significantly from 4.26 to 3.51
Sao Paulo Pilots.
Katsunan Hashimoto $15,000,000.
A workhorse of a player Hashimoto as only missed an handful of games in his 6 years with the Sao Paulo Pilots, a trend the Pilots will continue in his seventh season. Averaging around the 35+ Home Runs and 100+ rbi's it's no wonder the BBA is circling and admiring his skills from afar for the time being that is.
His bat and longevity being comparisons to the greatest bay in the GBC that of Quinn Greene some day he could even surpass Greene's home run record of 632 and his rbi mark of 1627, both of which many thought would never be broken for many a year both of which Hashimoto is close to half way towards.
Sydney Sharks.
José Márquez. $6,000,000
Going into his 6th year with the Sydney Sharks, many feel that Márquez as a lot to prove on if he deserves a new contract. A dependable bat a few years ago, it's showing signs of decline as does his globe work and at an age of 28 when he should be reaching his prime then his decline is a concern.
Tokyo Pearls.
Afzul Chishti. $7,500,000.
When you play for the Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers, Cairo Pharaohs and Tokyo Pearls, the big 3 of the GBC you must have something about you. Chishti as it in bucket loads, at the age of 31 he's got had in the tank to play for an few more years yet and averaging double digits in the win column he should be in the cost tails of Owen Geddes but it's highly doubtful he'll catch up to the Peter Pan of the GBC.
If his last few years in the GBC go as well as the previous nine seasons have then he should find himself second in every pitching catagory below Geddes, maybe even first in some.
