2047 UMEBA Defensive Plays Above Average

Post by RonCo » Mon May 31, 2021 12:08 pm

It's way, way too early to glean real information from fielding data, but I've been fiddling with my scripts to see how v22 might mess with them, so I'm posting the first set of defensive metrics early this year. So, behold, the latest Plays Above Average data for 2047...

For those new to the concept, I run a script against every game log that does the following:

1) Pulls batted ball type (GB/FB/LD), location (Fielding Zone), and results (out/error/hit), then compiles them into simple “out, error, hit,” results.
2) Then, zone by zone, it compiles the numbers and develops a baseline league average for how often a ball in any particular zone is turned into an out.
3) At this point, I use the actual balls hit into a zone against each defensive team to come up with the number of plays an average fielder would have made.
4) I then compute the final “Plays Against Average” for ground balls, fly balls, and line drives as the number of plays the team actually made minus those a league average team would have made.

Her's the data through 4/6/2047:

Middle of the pack thanks to my tremendous fly ball defense. Now, if only my guys could handle balls hit on the ground in a much better way.....

My remodelled infield defence has got a lot better at ground balls but the outfield is still sinking into the molasses on fly balls. Still, happy that the overall defence is moving in the right direction

Could improve my OF defense significantly by moving Ayala back to the outfield. The infield defense would still be OK, but we'd lose a valuable offensive bat in the lineup. Bringing Shacklady back to Cairo from AAA where he has been hammering the ball. Maybe he'll start to hit some. That would help on so many levels.

So my correction from the mid season swoon happens to coincide with me climbing these rankings. Interesting

Everything is good but flyballs to us. We must be just staring when it goes up in the air, get the outfield some glasses lol
