For those new to the concept, I run a script against every game log that does the following:
1) Pulls batted ball type (GB/FB/LD), location (Fielding Zone), and results (out/error/hit), then compiles them into simple “out, error, hit,” results.
2) Then, zone by zone, it compiles the numbers and develops a baseline league average for how often a ball in any particular zone is turned into an out.
3) At this point, I use the actual balls hit into a zone against each defensive team to come up with the number of plays an average fielder would have made.
4) I then compute the final “Plays Against Average” for ground balls, fly balls, and line drives as the number of plays the team actually made minus those a league average team would have made.
