2043 UMEBA ALL STAR GAME: The Rarest of Events

Post by HerbD » Mon Jul 20, 2020 10:02 pm

No hitters are suppose to be rare. On one magical night everything goes just right for a pitcher or maybe a few pitchers and the opposing team is left looking to the sky at bat after at bat as they head back to the dugout searching for guidance from a higher power. What are the chances that nine different pitchers have their best stuff on the same night? And have their best stuff on a night they are facing an All-Star team that averaged 20 homers per player heading into the game? It's about as likely as seeing Big Foot flying a UFO but it happened. Up until July 9, 2043 there had never been a no hitter in the six and half season history of the UMEBA. That's a small sample size for a start up league but if you compare that the Brewster Baseball Association has recorded at least 70 no hitters since 1995 it was long over due.

It wasn't a perfect game for the Burt League All Stars by any means but it was exciting to watch as it unfolded before 28,000 fans at the Ballpark at Mumbai. The game started off harmless enough with each team scoreless for the first two innings although the Burt League did manage a couple of hits those guys were stranded. A walk, a single, and a two out RBI single by Weaver Ripley broke the ice and put the Burt on top 1-0 in the top of the third inning. A four pitch walk would load the bases and send Bucky Dornster to the plate to face a clearly shaken Manuel Pena. Dornster would not waste any time as he rocketed the first pitch he saw to deep right-center for a 422 foot grand slam to push the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the third inning the Bancroft League All-Stars had their best shot at scoring when Antonio Baca was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Luis Moreida would strike out the side in 11 pitches despite Baca reaching third on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Burt would strike again in the top of the fourth with an RBI double by Joey Newhouse and in the top of the fifth with solo homers by Ripley and Raul HernandezRaul Hernandez to make it 8-0. Sandwiched in between the Burt scoring the Bancroft's Michael Best reached base on a error but was stranded.

The Bancroft would net baserunners in the bottom of the seventh(HBP) and eighth(nine pitch walk) but each were stranded and neither would make it past second base. The Burt would put runners on base for three of the next four innings but they two would be stranded. In total nine different pitchers pitched one hitless inning for the Burt League All-Stars in the game. Three of them would strike out the side. "We didn't come out here thinking we were gonna pitch a no hitter!" an excited Johan Trojka explained at the post game news conference. "Getting the early runs helped take the pressure off us pitchers and we just all went out and did our thing."

Yes they did...and now it's history!

Glad to be part of history and glad an Alhafr pitcher was able to slam the door.

And I am elated that Trojka started it off, and Silvester held it down in the middle.

Honestly, this is an incredible day for the BURT
