The Walkoff Watch Terminology

Balkoff - When a pitcher balks in the winning run.

Derpoff - When a pitcher walks in the winning run, hits a batter with the bases full, or the winning run scores due to a wild pitch or error.

200-proof walkoff - When the home team scores in the bottom of a previous inning to extend the game and then scores with a walkoff in a subsequent inning.

Buntoff When the team bunts in the walkoff run.

Pimpoff - When the home team scores a walkoff following the visiting team tying the game to cause extra innings (or more extra innings) or scoring what would have been the winning run if the home team hadn’t responded.

Bunt-Pimpoff A pimpoff, but when the batter successfully bunts home the walkoff run.

Player & Team Highlights Sim #26
September 22nd- September 28th

As we arrive at the penultimate week of the UMEBA season the post season placings are all but over. Seven games out of the 24 saw scoring in the bottom of the ninth, but only one produced a walkoff. One of them though led to the only extra-inning game of the sim which produced our second walkoff

Outcomes

The first game of interest came on Thursday, September 26th when Istanbul visited Baghdad. The Bosphorus jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Kings scored two in the bottom of the third to flip the lead. Istanbul aren’t the division leaders though for nothing, runs in the top of the eighth & ninth sent them into the bottom of the ninth 3-2 up. Bras Gesteiras couldn’t hold the day though, a double and a stolen base put the tying run at third and a sac fly tied it all up at 3-3. In the 10th innings Istanbul grabbed a walk but that was it while Baghdad couldn’t do anything with two walks. Both teams again got runners in the 11th and once more failed to plate anybody. The 12th was ended for both teams by a double play erasing their hopes and we headed to the 13th inning. Again, both teams managed two runners in this fourth extra innings but stranded them all. The game sailed on past the 14th with two 1-2-3 innings and progressed into the 15th. Finally two singles and a double by the Bosphorus saw two runners cross home plate and it looked like Istanbul had cracked the win. Jose Espinoza took the mound to close out the win, but was yanked after he gave up two walks, a double and a wild pitch that closed the score to 5-4 with two runners still on base. Bernardino Bertoletti took the mound to rescue the situation, unfortunately the first batter he faced hit a double and the game was tied. With a ground-out and a walked batter there was now runners at first & second with still only one out. A strikeout helped the situation for Bertoletti, but next batter, Jeffrey Verkade, saw the shortstop bobbled the ball for what should have been the game-winning out. The batter reached on that error and the runner from third scooted home to give the Kings a win. This is charged as a normal walkoff as the pitcher wasn’t responsible for the error and so is not held to be a Derpoff.
On the final day of the sim, September 28th, Mumbai travelled to Beirut. The hometown Cedars scored in the first and the second to take an early lead before Mumbai cut that with their first hit of the game in the third, a 355ft homer to left. The Metro Stars struggled to put anything together after that and it was still their only hit as we rolled into the ninth innings. They had worked six walks but no hits, luckily for them the Cedars had done nothing with their paltry three hits since the third innings either. In the last chance saloon now, Mumbai opened with a walk, their seventh of the game, they then finally got their second hit to give them runners at the corners. A sac fly wasn’t enough to tie the game as the runner was tagged out at home, but the trail runner made it to second on the play. Bursting with life now the Metro Stars fired another hit into left and finally got the tying run home from third. That was were it stopped though; the outs ran out before they could take a lead. Leonardo Gomez took the mound in the bottom of the ninth charged with getting Mumbai to extra innings. Two batters latter he was faced with runners at the corners and then he hit Carlos Torres to load the bases with nobody out. A fielder’s choice brought the first out but left runners at second & third as Juan Rodriguez dug into the batter’s box. Having recovered from 0-2 to a full count Juan slashed the ball between third and short to allow the runner at third to sprint home. It was only the second time Mumbai had given up a walkoff (Rodriguez was the goat the first time too) and only the third time this season they had been involved in a walkoff.
