Player & Team Highlights Sim #25
September 15th- September 21st
Although the teams were still quite keen to win early, 10 of our 24 games on the slate featured runs in the ninth innings. Only one was in the bottom of the ninth to bring us success, but three games overall went to extra innings and there too, just one was won in the bottom half. So it’s two walkoffs on week 25’s slate.
Outcomes
On September 17th still struggling Cairo went to Baghdad, the Kings earned a quick 2-0 lead only to see the Chariot Archers pull level in the top of the fifth. Baghdad wasn’t daunted though and promptly hit a three-run homer in the bottom half of the innings. Coming into the ninth Cairo were back behind by 6-3 and hope was fading. The Chariot Archers set about battering Lucas Meech, four hits and a walk took the score to 6-6 with two-out and two men on base. Cairo got their fifth hit of the innings and the runner from second put on the afterburners, speeding past third with the winning run . . . but LF Aymeric Barajas has a cannon attached to his arm and the ball was straight & true, the catcher tagged the runner out at home. Pedro Vazquez took the mound in the bottom of the ninth trying to get the game to extras, he started well, two Kings batters fell, and it was down to Vazquez v Raul Hernandez. It only took one pitch, and the fan in the right field box seats was holding up a souvenir. Hernandez had himself a homer & a pimpoff.
Two days later on the 19th the top two in the BANC league went head-to-head in Bucharest. The visitors, the Hebrew Hammers, scored first but the lead went back & forth and by the end of the sixth it was 3-3. It was still like that heading into the ninth, a walk each was all the sides could manage in the ninth, so it was on to the 10th. Both sides went quietly, 1-2-3, in the 10th and the players readied themselves for another innings. In the 11th Jerusalem hit a single getting a potential game-winner on base and he advanced to second on a wild pitch, but that was as far as he got. Hector Barajas took the mound in the bottom of the 11th and struckout his first batter faced. The second batter dumped a flyball into shallow left and reached base when no-one could get to it. Up stepped switch hitter Brian Sullivan, The first pitch to him ran low & away for ball one, the second drifted over the plate and Sullivan made Barajas pay. The ball left the bat with a sweet crack and the rightfielder got whiplash watching it sail into the stands. Bucharest had pulled level with Jerusalem with a league high tenth walkoff.
