The Walkoff Watch Terminology

Balkoff - When a pitcher balks in the winning run.

Derpoff - When a pitcher walks in the winning run, hits a batter with the bases full, or the winning run scores due to a wild pitch or error.

200-proof walkoff - When the home team scores in the bottom of a previous inning to extend the game and then scores with a walkoff in a subsequent inning.

Buntoff When the team bunts in the walkoff run.

Pimpoff - When the home team scores a walkoff following the visiting team tying the game to cause extra innings (or more extra innings) or scoring what would have been the winning run if the home team hadn’t responded.

Bunt-Pimpoff A pimpoff, but when the batter successfully bunts home the walkoff run.

Player & Team Highlights Sim #23
September 1st- September 7th

Another 24 games on the slate as we step into the final full month of the 2041 UMEBA season. As the various races intensify the teams were keen to get it on and get the game won. In fact, all but two of the 24 games were done and dusted by the ninth innings, an honourable mention for leaving it late must go to Mumbai at Baghdad. No score after seven innings, Mumbai hit three in both the eighth and the ninth to seal a 6-2 win, Baghdad just managing two in the final half innings. The final two games that weren’t settled by the ninth both weren’t settled after nine either. They went to extras and both provided walkoffs for us.

Outcomes

On September 4th Cairo hosted Beirut and got on the board with the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first. In keeping with the Chariot Archers season, they were 4-2 down by the middle of the fifth, but a cluster of runs in those middle innings left Cairo 7-6 up. They couldn’t hold it though and the Cedars turned four hits and a hit-by-pitch into the game tying run. It was a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth and the only action in the top of the 10th was Cisco Salinas hitting his second batter of the game. Bottom of the 10th and John Jefferson was on the mound, the crowd roared as his first batter faced reached first on a single past second. Raul Castrejon struck out, but the runner stole second and the Chariot Archers were in business. Two batters later there was runners at first & second with two out when catcher Bungay Martin stepped to the plate. Second pitch he thrashed a line drive between first and second bases out into right field., the runner hardly sprinted as he went second to home, providing Cairo with their third walkoff of 2041.

We had to wait until the final day of the week for our second walkoff. Bucharest were in Istanbul in what could be a preview of this season’s World Series. A flurry of runs by both sides left the score at 5-4 to the visiting Impalers after five innings. A double in the seventh by the Bosphorus had their eyes glinting especially as the Impalers hit the next batter. They only got one run home though and we proceeded at 5-5. It all dried up then, the teams produced just two hits and nothing else the rest of the way and we went to extras. Istanbul got a runner in the bottom of the 10th but couldn’t do anything with him and the same happened in the 11th. Bucharest got two aboard in the 12th without joy while Istanbul got a runner to second. On to the 13th and Istanbul wasted another runner, the 14th saw two 1-2-3 innings as we reached the 15th. Bucharest managed runners at the corners but once more the Bosphorus stifled the threat. Glenn Avery started the bottom of the 15th on the mound but was yanked after he hit a batter and walked another leaving runners at the corners with two out. Cisco Chavez took the mound to get that final out, but it didn’t go to plan as he walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. John Garcia dug into the batter’s box and took two balls while fouling off three pitches, as the sixth pitch came in it screwed off to the right and the catcher couldn’t get anywhere near it. The runner from third trotted gently home as Istanbul took the win on that wild pitch on one of the longest 2041 UMEBA games.
