The Walkoff Watch Terminology

Balkoff - When a pitcher balks in the winning run.

Derpoff - When a pitcher walks in the winning run, hits a batter with the bases full, or the winning run scores due to a wild pitch or error.

200-proof walkoff - When the home team scores in the bottom of a previous inning to extend the game and then scores with a walkoff in a subsequent inning.

Buntoff When the team bunts in the walkoff run.

Pimpoff - When the home team scores a walkoff following the visiting team tying the game to cause extra innings (or more extra innings) or scoring what would have been the winning run if the home team hadn’t responded.

Bunt-Pimpoff A pimpoff, but when the batter successfully bunts home the walkoff run.

Player & Team Highlights Sim #5
Apr 28th – May 4th

24 more UMEBA games in the books this sim but the teams are still pretty shy about scoring those ninth innings runs. Only five of those 24 games saw any runs scored in the ninth, 14 ninth innings runs were scored in those games though. The only game that mattered for our Walkoff Watch though contributed five of those 14 tallies.

Outcomes

Our one walkoff this sim came on the penultimate day when Cairo played game two of a double-header at Bucharest. Having lost game one earlier in the day 5-3, the Chariot Archers could have been forgiven for dropping their heads when the Impalers scored three in the third and another three in the fourth, but two homers in the top of the fifth helped Cairo score 6 runs to tie the game. We arrived at the 9th with Bucharest back in the lead at 9-7. The small pocket of travelling fans went wild as their backup catcher Jose Sanchez launched a three-run homer over the fences to send Cairo into a 10-9 lead. Jorge Barron is sent to the mound to improve his shaky save record, but is straightway in trouble allowing a hit to his first batter faced. The save is blown two batters later as Bucharest hit a triple to tie the game at 10. Barron is left in to face Antonio Lara and Lara leaves his first pitch, low & away, well alone. Barron is in the windup for his second pitch when he catches a whirl of movement out of the corner of his eye. Unable to stop himself completing the pitch, it’s all hands on-deck as the runner from third is dashing home ! Lara gets the bat-head out there and drops a perfect bunt down to the third base side, Sanchez is out of his crouch and Felix Arrojo dashes in from third, but neither can retrieve the ball in time to make the play. Primio Anastcia, who has a walkoff of his own to his credit, passes the plate at full speed to score the Impalers 11th run. Bucharest execute a perfect Squeeze-Bunt to take the game and create a new category of Walkoff – the Buntoff. Not just content with that, the home side have won the game with a Bunt-Pimpoff. We might only have five walkoffs this year, but three of them have been of the speciality variety.
