This week in UMEBA
This is baseball, UMEBA baseball… this is the ghost of Mel Allen saying get set for this week in UMEBA baseball…(preseason edition)
Let’s start out by tipping the hat to the Archer's Brody “I need a nickname” Weston – leading the league in average for the week with a stratospheric .462 average in 31 PA. This 22-year-old is making a name for himself early on this preseason. Speaking of averages, the top 3 leaders are all Archers team-mates Bungay Martin and Higino Ocha. It could be a long year for pitchers in the UMBA if this keeps up. Could one of these kids could catch 2038 Chester Owens elusive mark of .350 for a season?
Speaking of up…. if you turned your gaze upwards this week baseball fans you might have seen Jerusalem’s version of ol’ Hammerin’ Hank himself smash home runs this week. Jose Ramirez leads the preseason after one week with 4 home runs. If he keeps up this pace in the regular season he’d be averaging a HR every 9AB (last year it was once every 18). Can he keep up this blistering pace and smash ~51 HRs this year? He’d be the 3rd Hebrew Hammer to do so joining teammates David Hall (61) and ex-Hebrew Hammer Patrick Lue (50). Makes you wonder what could have been if wasn’t traded.
Gotta give some love to the pitchers, and speaking of P, how about Manama Pearls Jose Rodriguez with 20ks in and only 3 BB in 11 IP, couple that with allowing only 5 hits, we could have our Rolaids Relief Man award winner right her. This Venezuelan 27-year-old could pitch his way into the BBA with those stats!
I know its early, but Jerusalem could have found its bell cow on the mound, in a 27-year-old Japanese born P Mashahiro Ogawa. In one week of preseason ball he has tossed a lot of innings (15.1) in 4 starts on a limited pitch count. – this Rockford castoff may have just found a home in the Holy Land…or at least Jerusalem wants a really good look at him.
…well that life in the world of baseball, and about all you can ever expect is the unexpected in the UMEBA.

I'm hoping that Inês Cloots makes it up to Jerusalem and rakes so you have a "Hall & Cloots" duo.

Weston & Ocha starred for A-ball Taipei last year with Martin at Nairobi, all three were ticketed for a season in Africa but the season-ending injury to Adrian Young could probably change that . . .
