HOF Talk: Francisco Arredondo

I always loved the name.

Arredonodo! Francisco Arredondo! It just seemed like the perfect name for a baseball player. Or a bullfighter, back in the age when that was still considered proper sport by a lot of the world. “Are you going to see Arredondo take on The Great Diablo?” I can picture it, you know?

He was also Very Good At Baseball.

A three-time All-Star, and a Puckett or three at 2B. Which is a big deal, really. Bats in the #4 hole have been in scarce supply at times, and being able to put Arredondo into the lineup was a luxury few manager had. He could pick it out there, too, as the 2042 Zimmer proves.

Alas. And you knew there had to be an Alas. He was one of those guys who turned 30 and lost the magic. Some folks say it was a trip to Madam HooDoo’s place after he signed that contract in New Orleans. Some say the contract he signed with the nice gentleman in the black suit down in the crossroads at the outskirts of Twin Cities just ran out. Personally, I’m imagining a bull running him over in an off-season sparring bout. Whatever it was, though, Arrendondo was never the same player after that.

I’m thinking 42 WAR isn’t going to be enough.
