HOF Talk: Octávio Moreno

Moreno’s candidacy will once again test the positional adjustment considerations of the voters. Or, otherwise stated, catchers have a pretty steep hill. For example, Moreno did 46 WAR, which is a pretty small number for any HoFer not named Dusty Rhodes. At the end of the day, I don’t think he’s going to make it. He is no Cisco Arreola, for example. And his ultimate problem is that his time as an elite came to an end around the time of his 30th birthday.
Shorter peaks have to blaze, and Moreno’s was not quite there.
One Zimmer. Four Pucketts. A ring with San Antonio. He made six All-Star teams.
Outstanding, of course. And if he’d had even two more “peak” seasons we’d probably be having a different discussion. But unless I hear a really good argument, he’s a “no” from the judge out there on the atoll.
