Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Brett Caves

Post by RonCo » Fri Jun 07, 2019 1:16 pm

**** VETERAN'S COMMITTEE CANDIDATE ****

Here's the place to talk about the career of:

Brett Caves

Center Fielder

Active Career: 1996-2008 (13 seasons)
1,527 Hits, 335 HR, .299/.376/.551, 145 wRC+, 59 WAR
5-Time All-Star

Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 52.9 (70)
Black Ink: 0 (33)
Gray Ink: 59 (112)
HOF Standards: 44 (53)
HOF Monitor: 59 (128)
# Stretching into the way-back machin, the Vetereans committee pulls out a longtime face of the Baltimore franchise (now Brooklyn). Cave's 59 WAR is borderline eye-popping, but is of note as he didn't really break into the league for good until he was 26 years old. At his peak, which ran a not insubstantial seven seasons, Caves was a 6-7 WAR kind of impact player.

So, just as Cavazoz (and maybe Gonzalez) are the poster boys for longevity, Caves might grab the attention of those "give me peak performance at a critical position" voters.

What a weird career.

It seems to short to really consider. I'd need some context as to why I should care about him.

Yeah, I'm interested in the longtimers' conversation here.

I had to go back and look up what I missed here. It appears... NOTHING.

Not a hall of famer. Overshadowed by a lot of other guys on a very good Baltimore team

He'd probably be a much more interesting discussion if he had those age 23, 24, and 25 years in the big leagues.

I tried to go back and see if I could find out why he was so late to the game. Baltimore didn't have a lot of TN articles when Caves came about.

He was a big part of those Baltimore teams. Defensively a stud as well. One of the better all-around players in the league during a HEAVY pitchers era.

Here is the stat breakdown of Brett Caves compared to all C(both individually and against the total mean). Players are sorted by total JAWS score, and any bolded names are on the HOF ballot this year. The mean listed does NOT include anyone on the ballot, just guys who have actually been elected to the HOF.
