Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Mario Gonzalez
Here's the place to talk about the career of:
Mario "Talk The" Gonzalez
Starting Pitcher
Active Career: 2021-2038 (18 seasons)
195-176, 4.19, 2,642 K, 1.30 WHIP, 4.09 FIP, 51.4 WAR
Landis Memorial Winner 2030, 2032
Zimmer Diamond Glove: 2033
1-Time All-Star
Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 39.7 (70)
Black Ink: 1 (33)
Gray Ink: 75 (160)
HOF Standards: 27 (50)
HOF Monitor: 50 (127)
# Gonzalez was potentially the most underrated pitcher of his time, or the most over-rated...depending on how you look at it.
He won nearly 200 games pitching for six franchises--mostly Vegas and Louisville, and was successful everywhere he went--even Madison, where he finished his career going 13-12 over three seasons and posted an additional 7.5 WAR. He struck out a lot of guys. He signed contracts that added up to the $119M that makes the Talk The family a very rich family. It all makes me want to vote for him, even though he turned traitor to my Yellow Springs franchise and signed with Louisville in a deal that got him to his two Landis wins.
And, yet, you scan down his FIP scores and see that he was good, but not great. That maybe if a guy like Cavazos had his support, we'd been touting Cavazos as a top-level guy rather than the borderline case he is. And the HoF Metrics clearly don't scream "vote for me!"
So, yeah. I'm interested to see where this one goes.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Mario Gonzalez
Nope. I'd like to make a case for him since he spent a brief period in Madison but I don't think he's anywhere good enough. Nice win total. But nah!

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Mario Gonzalez
Here is the stat breakdown of Mario Gonzalez compared to all starting pitchers on the ballot this year (both individually and against the total mean). Players are sorted by total JAWS score. The mean listed does NOT include anyone on the ballot, just guys who have actually been elected to the HOF (and are not named Steve Nebraska).

Just commenting here as I go through this, but this is great work you've done. Really helps give perspective.
