Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Juan Escobar
Here's the place to talk about the career of:
Juan Escobar
First Base
Active Career: 2021-2037 (17 seasons)
3,412 Hits, 496 HR, 1,875 RBI, .326/.380/.529, 91.3 WAR
4-Time Sawyer Silk Award Winner
8-Time Puckett Award Winner
3-TIme Zimmer Diamond Glove Winner
8-Time All-Star
Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 76.4 (54)
Black Ink: 75 (22)
Gray Ink: 226 (109)
HOF Standards: 64 (53)
HOF Monitor: 308 (125)
# Technically, this thread is a place for discussions and arguments, but holy freaking Hell, man ... look at those HoF Standards and give me even a single argument for how someone doesn't include Juan Escobar on a ballot? One of the most feared hitters in the league for a very long time. Essentially, across a decade, Seattle fans just wrote down 8.5 WAR and cheered.
Anyway...have fun discussing one of the stronger franchise players in league history.

After a lot of thought, I think I'm going to have to vote him in.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Juan Escobar
I will be the first to admit that I am very hesitant and very picky when it comes to people I will elect to the hall of fame. Last year, I only elected 2 or 3 people with YES votes...This year, I expect it to be the same. If we elect everyone it turns into a retirement home for anybody who played 3 seasons in the league and maybe held down a starting position for those 3 years...
I will say that Juan Escobar will be getting a yes from me, although I would have been more impressed had he crossed the 500 home run line.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Juan Escobar
Yeah, had he not retired he definitely would have passed 500 this year. Also worth noting that his home field was always unfriendly to home runs.niles08 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2019 8:53 amI will be the first to admit that I am very hesitant and very picky when it comes to people I will elect to the hall of fame. Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Juan Escobar
Indeed it was. He has a great batting line and has the hardware at home to support it. I wish he had a Landis as well but he was already a yes from me. That should go as saying something since I said I am pretty picky and personally think that the hall of fame has quite a few players that were not worthy in it so have a hard time basing my votes on whether or not guys who were "worse than them" are already in because that doesn't help the cause.njherdfan wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2019 9:45 amYeah, had he not retired he definitely would have passed 500 this year. Escobar however should be a first ballot yes.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Juan Escobar
I feel like the retirement home argument is over stated and hate hearing it. It's just not true. About 1% of MLB players are in the hall. When I looked awhile back, we were around the same mark (although less consistent, due to voting changes). If you are a small hall guy, and want it to be the elite of the elite, I think that's fine. I'm a medium to big hall person, but I can respect the idea that you just want a handful of guys per decade. My argument is that a hall that size doesn't tell enough of a story about baseball. I think there are arguments for small hall that are compelling. But the idea that "everyone will get in" is not one of them. The biggest hall electors would only elect around 2-3% of the player population. If we lowered the threshold to 60% from 70, it would still only be 2%.niles08 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2019 8:53 amI will be the first to admit that I am very hesitant and very picky when it comes to people I will elect to the hall of fame.
