Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Diego Moreno

Post by RonCo » Tue Aug 28, 2018 8:22 am

Here's the place to talk about the career of: Diego Moreno
Image
Third Base

Active Career: 2017-2033 (17 seasons)
2489 hits, 269 HR, 1093 RBI, .289/.344/.439 242 SB, 70.3 WAR
2-Time Charles Pucket Golden Bat
5-time Zimmer Diamond Glove
5-Time All-Star

Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 55.7 (60)
Black Ink: 4 (22)
Gray Ink: 58 (105)
HOF Standards: 42 (53)
HOF Monitor: 68 (123)
# Diego Moreno split his time among 8 different franchises, hitting pretty much everywhere he went until he hit age 34, at which point he fell off the table. Perhaps his best stint was with Birmingham, a 6-season jaunt that registered 30.8 WAR. Until then he looked a lot like the 3B version of Juan Pablo (or, vice versa, right?). Counting numbers are good, not great. Standard tests are good, not great.

That's a pretty solid WAR but I just don't think the counting numbers getting him over the top. Good solid player. Not a HOF. See: Robert Jowers

This is another tough one. It's pretty weird to even dither about putting a 70 WAR player in the hall. But the batting numbers just don't pop. Then you see the defense. I just noticed that his defensive totals include non major league level stuff that knocks him back to a mere 20 or so wins with the glove rather than 26. It's still pretty damn amazing. But now a much tougher case. He should get some more traction. Again, 3B is underrepresented, but with Boogie one the ballot this year, I expect Moreno will not improve. I would argue that a few of us should continue to vote for this gu yso we can think about him longer. He's pretty amazing in not so obvious ways.

By ZR he is the 8th best glove in league history with +187.5. He is the second best 3B, just barely behind john Wilkinson, who was a below average batter. He is second all time in defensive efficiency (EFF) with 1.078 for any third baseman to play more than 1000 games at the position to to again John Wilkinson. This is the second best fielding third baseman of all time. He was also a well above average hitter for his career. That's why he has 70 WAR.

Only one player, Rogelio Morale played more innings at the hot corner. It's getting tougher and tougher for me to say no.

Like I think I said in the last HoF pod, after looking at him, I got a mental image of Brooks Robinson. Reliable and solid hitter, the definition of the position in the field. It would be hard for me not to vote for Brooks Robinson. :)

Jsut gonna keep voting for him. One of the best defenders in league history. Above avg bat at third during a weak hitting era.

Nothing screams hall of gamer quite like playing for eight different teams

Apparently seven teams didn’t think enough of him to make sure he stuck around

I've never considered number of teams strongly. I've always felt more that various causes of financial management has more to do with great player movement than whether the player was great. Maybe I'll look at it more.

I just know that if I’m lucky enough to get a generational guy...a hall of gamer

I move the pieces around HIM

I don’t move him

Yes, but an online league is a weird environment like that, too. See: Sandcastle, Leon ... Rodriguez, Emilio ... that said, Moreno is on an edge for me, and as I noted in the Franco thread, I may move my vote from him to Franco rather than vote for both.

Still debating.

Here is the stat breakdown of Diego Moreno compared to all 3rd basemen (both individually and against the total mean). Players are sorted by total JAWS score, and any bolded names are on the HOF ballot this year. The mean listed does NOT include anyone on the ballot, just guys who have actually been elected to the HOF.

Like Carlyle, his numbers are very similar to the guys already in the Hall. Offense is a tad worse than average, but he's one of the best defenders to ever play. Should be in.
