Hall of Fame Candidate Thread: Gary Estes

Post by RonCo » Mon Aug 27, 2018 4:37 pm

Here's the place to talk about the career of:

Gary "Coop" Estes
Image
Starting Pitcher

Active Career: 2017-2035 (19 seasons)
240-127, 3.58 ERA, 2935 K, 70.6 WAR
Landis Champion: 2027
2018 Nebraska Award
6-Time All-Star

Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 56 (72)
Black Ink: 11 (34)
Gray Ink: 148 (162)
HOF Standards: 54 (49)
HOF Monitor: 143 (125)
# Played the bulk of his career with the Las Vegas Hustlers, and led the league with 19 victories in 2022 (21 in 2030). Estes was not only a talented pitcher, but he was a workhorse, registering 200+ innings for 13 straight seasons. His HoF Metrics are very solid, but don't scream slam dunk.

Agree to disagree, he’s a slam dunk.

I'll vote for him, but his Hof Standards are all on the just under average. For whatever that means.

240 wins is one of those things that you vote for even if you know it's team-dependent, in no small part because it shows his staying power.

I was actually surprised that his JAWS ans Ink test scores were as low as they were.

He was, like, the name around the league when I came in, so I came in with a ++ bias, and had to check down a little at those. Perhaps that's just me not being in the thick of it.

I love me some Estes. I don't think he's a slam dunk, but he probably deserves a plaque.

Bumping for continued eligibility. Estes received 68% of the vote last season.

Something makes me not want to vote for Estes. I don't really know why. I think it's because he doesn't really have the true dominance for 5-6 years that I expect form an HOF pitcher. He was just extremely good for a long time. On the other hand I have no problem voting for Boone, who has a very similar career. I think there's just something wrong with my internal perception of Estes.
