Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
Here's the place to talk about the career of: Martin Felix
Right Field
Active Career: 2011-2029 (19 seasons)
2,691 hits, 173 HR, 991 RBI, .310/.382/.444, 109 SB, WAR: 55.4
Landis Champion: 2026
2-Time Sawyer Silk Winner
Pucket Golden Bat Winner
4-Time All-Star
2-Time Zimmer Diamond Glove Winner
Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 47.1 (58)
Black Ink: 34 (22)
Gray Ink: 111 (105)
HOF Standards: 45 (53)
HOF Monitor: 126 (123)
[hr]
At his peak Felix was one of the most feared hitters in the league, winning a pair of Silk Awards while with Greenville. Led the league in hits and runs and pretty much everything except the big power numbers. His fade was fairly deep, though--and he hung around for a long time while his value was minimal. Interesting candidate. Big scores on the Inks. Close everywhere else.

Brilliant early.
Less so later.
Limited power, no speed.
My first thought is "no".
But for some reason I hesitate.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
His standards scores catch my eye. He was an old guy by the time I got here. Definitely interested in other people's views or memories.
Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
Hmm. I don't think so? He was one of the game's best at the start of his career, but being really good for a couple of years does not a HOF career make. I think his prime elevates the overall perception a little bit.

2,500 hits seems to be a strong number. Out of the 43 people who have achieved it, 34 are in the hall (and 3 are on this ballot). Add in a couple sawyer silks, and a good glove...i think he makes it.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
I don't think I can vote for Felix. He's close. But it's hard to put a guy that either had to platoon or was injured from his late 20's and on in the Hall, not without a higher early career peak. Felix was very good early, but not good enough to prop up his other years. His best seasons are age 23,24,25. Throw in the age 27 year as another all star caliber level year. That's about it though. The rest of the career was simply above average. Not enough for me. He needed another all star or better caliber year.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
The overall stats (particularly hits) look good..but it is also a function of longevity. I'm still on the fence. Solid counter argument here.

I lean no, but 2 Silk's gives him an edge over other players with similar numbers. I guess it depends on who he's up against.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
Kind of fell off the table at 30. Then farther off the table at age 35. Probably a no/low for me, but we'll see how I feel when I go to the voting booth.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
Its a no for me.
I like to base whether these newer guys should be in based on whether guys before them are in. Yes, Felix's two Silks are impressive. But the stats, they compare to the very good, but not elite guys we have who aren't in either.
Robert Jowers isn't in the HOF and he has very comparable stats to Felix. Plus Jowers played 3b, a position where stats like that might mean a lot more than an OF like Felix.

Re: Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Martin Felix
As much as I love Martin Felix, I kind of feel he needed to "pull a Clough" and stick around long enough for 3,000 hits to get in. He was never a power hitter, was only good defensively very early in his career, needed to be platooned throughout his 30's. I feel like a corner outfielder needs to really put up no brainer numbers to make the hall.

Felix fell to only 28% of the vote last year. He has one more season on the ballot.

Don't think Felix is going to make it. Hall of Very Good. Just doesn't have much to hang his hat on other than the Two Silk Awards.
