Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Boone Carlyle

Post by RonCo » Fri Jun 29, 2018 6:09 pm

Here's the place to talk about the career of: Boone Carlyle
Image
Third Base

Active Career: 2016-2034 (19 seasons)
2,531 hits, 245 HR, 1,120 RBI, .292/.366/.433, 8 SB, WAR: 65.9
3-Time Charles Pucket Golden Bat Winner
3-Time All-Star

Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 51.6 (60)
Black Ink: 0 (22)
Gray Ink: 51 (105)
HOF Standards: 44 (53)
HOF Monitor: 56 (123)
[hr]
Carlyle split his long career in half, breaking in with Louisville and spending the last decade with Atlantic City. His last four seasons were poor (draging down his JAWS score), but taking those away, Carlyle was the picture of consistency...write him down for maybe 4.5WAR and leave him be. His three Pucket awards, paried with a 0 Black Ink test might say something about the overall quality at the hot corner during this period?

Talk about a model of consistency. Basically 4.5 to 5 WAR every year for over a decade. Doesn't have the peak years of a lot of HOFers, and the last few seasons wont help. An interesting case for sure.

Tough one. He was an outstanding defensive third baseman throughout his career as well. Seems like a close but no cigar.

But we did just talk about the dearth of 3B in the Hall.

Another of the guys I'd probably say no to, but wouldn't feel horrible if the league voted him in. Clearly a guy for the ATC HoF (calling Joshua, calling Joshua).

Yeah...i vote no. Good consistent player, but not hall worthy IMO.

I think there's an argument to be made for those who were good for a long time, but never great...you could say that they were at least elite in their consistency. Despite WAR similarities to third sackers Trey Williams (SEA) and Dale Bunker (BAL), who ARE in the Hall, it seems as though batting titles, Zimmers, and more All-Star selections are the difference for those two.

Very good player. As Ron, said, I'd probably say no but he wouldn't be the worse entry, I'm sure. He may need some weak classes to get in to move up on peoples list to get the points.

After looking at him pretty closely, I come out with this. I'd love to have Boone Carlyle on my team. If I were Nigel, I'd put him in my Louisville HoF. Outstanding guy to have around. If others can get up the velocity needed to get him over the hump, I woukldn't argue or feel bad about it. But as it stands now for me he's probably a "missed it by just that much" kind of guy.

He might well make the Louisville HoF at some stage but at the moment there are a few more deserving candidates, Boone never really touched the higher level of too many of the Sluggers records, consistant yes but not a Louisville record breaker. We do have plans though to end a 10-year hiatus on inductions with a special ceremony before the home opener 2037.

Carlyle dropped to 10.4% of the vote last year...barely maintaining eligibility. He has four seasons remaining.

It’s a crime he isn’t in already

Yet people are still clamoring for Diego Suitcase Moreno

A guy is pretty damn good if ghe franchises he plays for refuse to give him up

He just might be the best 3B in the history of the BBA

I think he's the definition of borderline for non small hall voters. Tough case. So many borderline all star caliber years. So few elite years.

It's interesting that's wee have such different takes on him. I vote for the guy, but best 3B in BBA history? That's a pretty hot take.

Better than Henry Jones?

Better than Rogelio Morales?

Better than Jake Urban?

Not even close. Now, those are the best of the best in the hall at 3B. Looking through, I think Carlyle is as good as at least of the couple guys in, but he's not the best 3B in the history of the BBA. Not by a long shot.

I deleted a couple replies I made because I felt I was beating a dead horse, at which point I often get worked up and start to cross the line from friendly bickering to jerk. Sorry about that.
