Hall of Fame Candidate Tread: Rafael Bido

Post by RonCo » Fri Jun 29, 2018 6:02 pm

Here's the place to talk about the career of: Rafael Bido
Image
First Base

Active Career: 2020-2033 (14 seasons)
2,007 hits, 493 HR, 1,376 RBI, .262/.367/.510, 362 SB, WAR: 50.6
Landis Champion: 2022
3-Time All-Star
1-Time Pucket Golden Bat Award
2-Time Comeback Player of the Year

Hall of Fame Metrics: (average HoF)
JAWS: 43.5 (55)
Black Ink: 27 (22)
Gray Ink: 139 (105)
HOF Standards: 44 (53)
HOF Monitor: 110 (123)
[hr]
Rafael Bido was a well-loved lifetime member of the Atlantic City Gamblers who retired at age 35. He was highly productive from the beginning of his career until the end (never a sub-zero WAR). His 493 lifetime homers leaves him #19 on th all-time list. Unlike many 1B, however, Bido could run, too, currently sitting at #81 on the BBA alltime steals list.

His outstaending Black/Gray Ink score suggests that he was often at the top of the league's leader boards.

So close on Bido. I'd have to hear a convincing argument.

I think he belong in the Terry Cochran (TM) hall of very very good, most likely. His speed probably gets overlooked, but his heavy platoon split really held him back on the hitting side.

Nine more homers could have gotten him in, though. Lots of walks, too. Does deserve some more examination.

If it's a straight Yes/No vote, I probably vote no. But if he got the vote I wouldn't feel it was a terrible call. If he had stuck around another year to get #500, it would be hard to say no. And those Black/Gray Ink numbers are impressive. He was very good in his time.

On the downside, especially since he was done so early I would have liked to see him put up another big year or two before the drop off.

Not sure where I'll rank him in the order, but it won't be at the tippy top.

Agree and also think that's unfair to him.
Not definite, but leaning heavily toward "yes"

Man, I don't know...when a 99 OPS+ is your lowest across about 14 seasons, you were pretty good. But he'd be one of the weakest first basemen in the Hall, by WAR.

Every time I put Bido out, I keep coming to his Black Ink and Gray Ink tests. The guy was an elite hitter at times--and thast's not counting the assumption that he almost certainly led 1B in steals most years. Right now I probably rank him as well as I can and hope he does well. Automatic induction into ATC's HoF, though.

If Hurley Reyes isn't in as a catcher, no way Bido gets in as a 1b.

And there's Hurley Reyes for the trifecta. Hah. I don't remember what I did with Bido last year. But he's a no. Needed to play longer or better. His stinker years at age 29 and 32 did him in.

This is a no from me. Although he was good at the plate, even in his final season. His 493 home runs is a nice number but 500 would have been better for him. I like his speed on the baths and he was consistent in WAR but not game changing enough most seasons to warrant spot in the HOF in my book.

Here is the stat breakdown of Rafael Bido compared to all 1st basemen (both individually and against the total mean). Players are sorted by total JAWS score, and any bolded names are on the HOF ballot this year. The mean listed does NOT include anyone on the ballot, just guys who have actually been elected to the HOF.

Reminds me a lot of Stephens at C. Has some stats that may be on par with a HOF but my goodness, put the damn ball in play.
