Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

That's always an issue trying to make overall assessments. In defense, it's my opinion that there is a very discernible performance difference between a low value and a high value inside a rating range. So a low 8 is not as good as a high 8...which may well be showing in the overall rating. Dunno. C...

It's also possible that he's on the very low end of that "8" range.

Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

And now I've started talking about what I wasn't talking about and Ron and Chris and Stever and talking about how we select players, and this thread is off the rails and I'll never get an answer. *sigh*. I'm just going to decide I was right, and OOTP changed something again. Do they tell us? It wou...

Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

I like the question of what is important, and whether its important becase gives us better bats with 9+ OF range or did we start accepting worse bats to get to 9+ OF range? So much of value is dependent upon the kinds of players out there. When I came into the league, it felt like there were some me...

Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

If scouting is off, OSA ratings are true. Or at least they are what is in the editor. I'm sure there are some hidden things.

Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

I would be careful about saying a guy has maxed out experience. That part of the algorithm has been adjusted several times.

My old guy Carlos Garcia (now with CCJ) was a guy that took a lllllllooooooooooonnnnnnngggggggggggg time to grow up his rating...which is now (I assume) a high 8.

Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

Jeff's right there, too. You can't see experience in the numbers. And players grow at different rates. Jimmy Starks, Jr. For example, is probably a "7" right now because (maybe) he's a a slow developer. In addition, Starks has bounced back ad forth from CF to SS and back to CF. It makes me wonder if...

Re: HOFers/PED Use

If I really had my choice, I'd prefer to remove the whole HoF in the way we talk about it, and leave it as a "pure" monument to baseball. Pete Rose and his story is in the Hall, after all. You go there and you can learn all about him--the good and the bad. He's just not enshrined as someone basebal...

Re: Is Something Different With CF Range?

Here's a quick cut of OF Ranges vs. Innings played at CF over the year so far.

Code: Select all

OF RNG	IP
4	0
5	522.4
6	224.3
7	3491.9
8	7344.4
9	11212.1
10	2677.9
11	642.1
Tot	26115.1

Suggest an 8 can play as long as something else raises quality high enough, and a 7 is about true "hold your nose minimum."

I admit I very rarely pay much attention to a guy's overall defensive rating.

Re: HOFers/PED Use

Using my logic on PEDs, I'd be fine saying Shoeless Joe, et al, could be freed because there was no baseball rule against gambling back in the day, but Pete could not be freed, because there was.

On the other hand, I don't view the Hall of Fame as purely "the best players no matter what," so what do I know?

Re: HOFers/PED Use

As I said in the other thread, I've come to the view that in the earliest days of the PED era, the league itself was largely at fault for looking the other way while actively encouraging their use. Once you get into the later 2000s, and the league made a firmer statement by aggressively policing the...

Re: Is Dashiell Faireborn the BBA’s Ozzie Smith in Process?

Simple linear progression takes Faireborn up to maybe +23. I doubt he'll get there, but it's possible. A quick look back at a name or so...Timmy Moulin got up to +16. Aparicio +15.6. I see a couple more low +15s.

Re: Is Dashiell Faireborn the BBA’s Ozzie Smith in Process?

Just another reference point: With two months and two weeks left in the season, Fairborne's ZR is +13.6 (up from the 13.2 it was at the All-Star break. Since ZR is a semi-counting stat, it's going to continue to rise as he plays. Without going all the way back through BBA history, here are just the ...

Re: Is Dashiell Faireborn the BBA’s Ozzie Smith in Process?

If you haven't read it, Ted, you'll probably like this view on Vizquel. Yes, he was good, but sheesh... https://blogs.fangraphs.com/jaws-and-the-2019-hall-of-fame-ballot-omar-vizquel/ I chose Ozzie as the comp for Faireborn specifically because he's _so far_ above the rest of the crowd. I completely...

Had to go back and fix auto-correct crap in last two posts.

Grumble.

My fingers are too fat, and I don't proof read very well. :)
