Re: 2014 MBWBA Amateur Draft: Best/Worst/Interesting Moves

I generally base who had the best draft by the first three rounds (anything after that's a bit of a crapshoot mostly), and I thought you got the best value possible for your picks.

2014 MBWBA Amateur Draft: Best/Worst/Interesting Moves

Now for the feature called "better than that other draft piece" by Kyle last year. (We take our plugs where we can.) As before, for entertainment purposes only. Worst value picks are based on whether the players should have been drafted as highly as they were, not the overall quality of the players...

Re: Analysis of the 2014 MBWBA Amateur Draft's First Round

I thought hard about Snape and Trickle at 15. I've been burned by <12 CON+EYE RHBs before, though (Snape) and already had a Dick-clone (Clayton) that I'm currently experimenting with. I love the analysis of the VAN pick, btw... I assumed the same thing when he came off the board, but maybe VAN just...

Analysis of the 2014 MBWBA Amateur Draft's First Round

This is the first in a two-part series analyzing this year's amateur draft. The second part will look at what I think are the best and worst picks and the most interesting ones. Disclaimer: As always, opinions and analysis are mine and mine alone and do not reflect any future, present or past knowl...

Wise Kraken Special: Carolina Draft Review (26)

The Carolina Kraken, owners of the #1 overall pick two years in a row, selected over a dozen players in this year's draft, most of whom will never see a major league ballpark. Some of them may never see the Kraken organization. Rumors are rumbling from within the Kraken organization that not only wi...

So I wrote up the first round of the amateur draft review...

I wanted to wait until people were done posting their own recaps of their draft before I posted the whole first round, so if I'm stepping on anyone's toes here, please let me know. I'll put it up there latest sometime after the sim Sunday.

Just two of my FIVE one-run losses in the first sim. Feeling good about my winning record prediction for the Hustlers though.

Wise Kraken 1.0: A Gutwrenching First Week

The Carolina Kraken might be an improved ballclub and they might not, but their first sim was full of heartbreak. Carolina went 3-7 in their first sim, going an astonishing 0-5 in one-run games while scoring 44 runs and allowing 45. Mashed into that 3-7 win was a series split against last year's FL ...

Wise Kraken 1.1: New Look Bullpen Working So Far

Carolina's bullpen might have only been the fifth best unit in the Frick League during the first sim, but that mark also accompanied a 3.18 ERA. That's miles ahead of where they were at any point in the season last year. The pen, which has been completely overhauled, acquitted themselves well in the...

Wise Kraken 1.2: A Tale of Two Offenses

The Carolina Kraken plan of putting high OBP people at the top of the lineup followed by Mike Carlton 's power bat is unquestionably working. Orazio Casale , Todd Clay , and Rafael Avila , all high-OBP players, have gotten on base 37 of 79 times this year, a .468 clip, and Carlton has two home runs ...

Wise Kraken 1.3: Tough Times for the Kraken Rotation

Signing Jeremy Gaze to a $15 million dollar deal this offseason was supposed to put the last piece in the Carolina rotation. Instead, both Gaze and Ashwin Vlasblom , the team's last two Rule 6 picks, were blasted to pieces by MBWBA pitching this week, as was increasingly questionable Daniel King . W...

And yea, verily, they started 8-1. Should be a good race at any rate and the loser of the race could easily take the wild card.

Re: 2014, Sim #1 Chatter

Sucks for me, but I'd hate worse being Birmingham: 2-8 and Pagan out for two months? Ouch. Did I mention that 3-7 sucks for me? I'd still be happy getting through April at 14-14 - tough schedule early.

Re: Even though my team will CLEARLY be mediocre

Same here. A lot of good things are happening in Carolina all at once: a complete pitching staff, a lineup that might finish (perish the thought) 10th in offense. Even the game thinks we're going to win 86 games, which would only be our most since Aguilar was on the team ten years ago.

I guess there won't be any issue about him wearing body armor at the plate.

And wait, Bruce Wayne is Batman?

Baltimore Monarchs Preview

Welcome to the preview of the reigning champion Baltimore Monarchs. No team has been to the playoffs more often than Baltimore, as they have missed the postseason just twice in the last 17 years, but they had never before won a title until last year, when they took down the Seattle Storm in seven g...
