Huntsville Headlines 38.004: Abner Wept
By David Laswell Special Correspondent The Sabre’s Point: A Sabermetric Journal Abner wept. And by Abner, I mean Doubleday. And by wept, I mean he took a look at the Pure Quality Start scores for the Huntsville Phantoms rotation and … well … waterworks ensued. http://pebabaseball.com/wp-content/upl...

Huntsville Headlines 38.003: The Problem of David Hall
[Recording starts] This is GM Voice Memo Number Two. I brought David Hall back to the majors this morning. Although I think I’m beginning to understand what my predecessor in the job was trying to do with the roster, I do not understand what he was doing with Hall. This is a kid who hits nearly 50 ...

Re: California 2038.10 - An arrogant Jerk's Guide to Sustained Winning, Part 3
So, Ted, what you're saying, I think, is that you can use free agency, but do so sparingly. Approach it with a budget in mind, don't bite on long-term contracts for older players, and concentrate on building your organization from within. I'm curious, then, about your philosophy on trading in this s...

Re: California 2038.10 - An arrogant Jerk's Guide to Sustained Winning, Part 3
Well, my biggest rule of thumb is to avoid long-term contracts, and to try avoid tipping from the $9 million range into $10 million or beyond. That second rule I've broken several times, but I'm usually pretty good about the first. I think you can win with a team of solid mostly yellow-to-green line...

Re: California 2038.10 - An arrogant Jerk's Guide to Sustained Winning, Part 3
If you define market value as whatever it takes to sign a player, though, then by definition you pay market value for any player you sign ... and you've overpaid. Is there any kind of rule of thumb for what, say, what you should pay for a point of WAR? The concept of arriving at value is eluding me ...

Re: California 2038.10 - An arrogant Jerk's Guide to Sustained Winning, Part 3
Ok, here are a couple of specific definitional questions. When you talk about “market value” free agents, what does that mean, exactly? What the player is asking? What others are willing to pay? How can you tell what a player’s market value is to determine if you’re over- or underpaying?

Re: California 2038.10 - An arrogant Jerk's Guide to Sustained Winning, Part 3
Ted: Another outstanding piece. So, let me give you a hypothetical (for here, it’s for real in my other league). You trade three decent but decidedly excess guys for a high-priced superstar to make a stretch run for the playoffs. You make the playoffs, win a couple of rounds, but lose in the league ...

Huntsville Headlines 38.002: Experimenting with openers
[Recording Starts] This is GM Voice Memo Number One. I'm trying to get settled in now, and one of the first things I did was take a look at our pitching rotation, since there’s widespread belief that it’s a problem area. http://pebabaseball.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/voice-memo-icon-iphone.png ...

Re: 2038, Sim #18 Chatter
7'3" Pancho Madrigal pitched a no hitter for me in double A. He also had a triple double and killed it on the offensive boards, if I read the box score right ... Seattle had a prospect leave to play basketball. I think he was under 6 feet tall. Madrigal would have been more realistic. OOTP channeli...

He comes to Huntsville from the Mumbai Metro Stars of the Unified Mi...

Re: GM Change, Huntsville Phantoms
Just by way of an FYI to everyone: I have exchanged emails today with Kyle, and he says he does not plan to take up the Huntsville reins again at this point and told me "to enjoy the team and the league." So, I shall do so unreservedly. I'll start posting some TN stuff, this evening most likely, and...
