You can use other programs as well. But winzip and WINRAR are free to download. You say they are "free to download", but they both appear to have 30-45 day intro periods where they are free, then you have to pay 30 bucks for the program. I had a free winzip, but my free period expired and i cannot ...

We hashed this out not too long ago and came to no conclusion. The most popular answer is that they do have a slight influence on development and performance, but not the end all be all.
