Re: New League Structure Discussion

And Ron, thanks for the breakdown of arb estimates in relation to the internal settings for superstar and star players. It's helping me frame where I want my settings. In comparison to the BBA settings, it looks like the correct approach to get waht I want is to actually raise the setting for less g...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

Again, I do appreciate the feedback. I said I don't want to debate here. But people have questioned they "why" of certain parts of my idea, so I figure I should at least respond. One theme I've heard is "this is a problem in MLB, too" - My response to this is, so what? It doesn't have to be. It's a ...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

Just realize that the idea of teams keeping their players, and players being paid what they are worth very early in their careers are at counter-purposes, so a design that does both is going to be hard to figure out at the end of the day. Yup, I get this, but it's still what I'm shooting for. When ...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

Yes, teams will want to keep their own players, but that's actually counter to the goal of paying for current value rather than past performance. One issue with the idea of achieving Pay for Current Value by extending Arbitration years is that I don't think salaries ever go down in arbitration. So ...

Re: Petition for 2040 Custom Amateurs

I dont get a vote, since I'm not a GM, but while I'm reading Brewster posts for a few days, I thought I'd comment. I love this idea. But yeah it's probably a lot of work for Recte. It would also be fun to find a pre MLBPA liscense game, and use a bunch of the names they made to sound like star playe...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

I hate real life service time manipulation as well. I think we are all so used to it, we're numb to its effects. We miss out on good, exciting baseball players because of it. It pushes teams to try to get better tomorrow, than right now. Sitting on players who could be playing right now because of ...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

Thanks for the replies Ron. As you're noting, this will look very different from a money distribution standpoint. And I don't really know how it will end up. To be clear, I will never get rid of tear down and rebuild. I will just make it less powerful. It's always going to be the most surefire metho...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

To a degree, that's true... but not that much different than other kinds of leagues. Every time you have a life roll, it takes time to get back into things. And you can always catch up. Having played stats only before, the biggest driver of time is that you have to pay attention to other teams more...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

If you had 30 equal caliber gms some of these ideas would work. Uncapped leagues end up with 2-3 gms winning 90% of the titles. Because it’s impossible to get 30 equal caliber gms at once, a salary cap levels the playing field from my experience. Utilizing service time is just simply smart and done...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

I was part of an uncapped league with revenue sharing and it did help with international spending but the gap between big market vs small market was so large that revenue sharing did very little to equal the playing field. As I said above, revenue sharing (outside Gate revenue) will never work to e...

Re: New League Structure Discussion

You aren’t poaching our GMs are you? I've got nothing going right now, so don't worry. And when I do start recruiting, I will not actively post here to do so. There are some of you I have talked with before when I brought up making a new league that expressed interest. But for the sake of fairness,...

New League Structure Discussion

So, I'm starting to get the itch to manage a team again (didn't even last a whole real life year). However, there are simply too many things I don't like about the Brewster to come back here. Now, that's not a knock on the Brewster. It's a fine league. The problems I think it has are ones the almost...

Re: The Most Common Way Teams Lose Value, Diatribe from a Retired Arrogant Jerk

Fair enough. The study I undertook does strongly suggest that whatever development level a player is at while in the majors can influence the development engine (which is why I posted it). I'm fine if you want to argue that the influence on players you're talking about is low. But I'll disagree if ...

Re: The Most Common Way Teams Lose Value, Diatribe from a Retired Arrogant Jerk

Ron, I mean, this has so little to do with the point I made about nearly developed players that I don't see why you posted it here. You actually picked the cases that are totally missmatched groups of players. I specifically talk about very high potential players who are nearly developed. And point ...

Re: The Most Common Way Teams Lose Value, Diatribe from a Retired Arrogant Jerk

Nice read Ted. As someone who is about to start from scratch with a whole new roster and a set of challenges ahead of me I'm excited for a fresh start. Though I kept waiting for the next reason of losing value being: 4. Getting attached to players and overpaying them when you're better off letting ...

The Most Common Way Teams Lose Value, Diatribe from a Retired Arrogant Jerk

So, before I left, I was writing a series about how I run my teams. There are definitely other ways. And specifically my way requires (at least as I see it) to adhere to an entire set of principles or it falls apart rapidly. I do think this is true of most models. You have to be be very careful abou...

Re: When to leave a baseball game...

My rule of thumb is typically never leave a game early. But I have. Worst was last year. I took my kids to a game in Cincinnati and it went extra innings. We had tickets to the Dave Matthews Band show later that night and we needed to shower and eat before the show. We left in about the 12th inning...

Re: Is Dusty Rhodes Overrated?

The Hall of Unique. This needs to become a thing in the BBA. Rhodes Emile Santos (87 doubles in a season, 9 straight seasons over 50 doubles, nearly as many career 2B+3B as singles) Luke Zalusky (1900 games played, never once hit more HR than 3B, 7 seasons over 20 3B) Mons Raider (1000+ SB, <200 CS...

Re: Are Linear Weights Outdated?

Also, if I missed any writing about this, please point me in the right direction. I don't presume to think I know more than Tom Tango et al, but I've just wondered about this more and more recently (as I've seen some odd managerial and front office decisions on playing time).
