I intended to release Walton and then looked at the potential shortstop market and decided I valued the certainty.

I don't think its fair to give MLB's financial system much of the blame for the Pirates not winning. If the Marlins/White Sox/Cardinals/Royals can win a World Series so can Pittsburgh.

First thing I’ll say is while those four guys who opted out and then re-signed got more guaranteed money out of their new deal they all had player options on their original contracts that gave them a lot more flexibility.
