63.7- End-of-Season Musings

Over the summer, the Gamblers employ several interns from local colleges. Being the magnanimous leader that I am, I always tell them that the door too my office is always open yo them, but unsurprisingly, few of them take advantage of it, preferring to spend time with those of their own age group. S...

63.6- Comings and Goings

As a very wise man named Billy Joel once said, "Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes", and the Gamblers have had their share of both recently. Firstly, I've lost another assistant general manager. Sergio Lopez has announced that he will be leaving the Gamblers. I have the worst luck ever with ass...

Re: Which Type of Hitter Do You Prefer?

I’m going through a phase where I’m valuing “eye” more than I have, because I suspect it might translate more easily as a player moves up the ladder. Don’t know if I’m onto anything, I just remember Bill James saying “The most important thing a hitter can do is avoid making an out”.

63.5- Marketing Mania

"I'm mad at you" said Sandy as he settled into the comfy chair opposite my desk. "Yeah? Get in line", I replied. Sandy was Atlantic City's promotion manager, and a guy I generally liked to keep happy. He had pulled some serious miracles keeping fan interest alive through our lean years, and he might...

Re: This Draft and Comp Picks

The rule mimics MLB. And if you don't offer slot, you don't get a comp pick. It's purpose is to prevent the player from holding the team hostage. In our league... Let's say I went on a cruise during the draft, and I got auto'ed an impossible to sign player. Sure, it's my fault for missing the draft...

This Draft and Comp Picks

Several of my fellow GMs were talking recently, and it was expressed that with this draft class being generally considered to be very poor, we could well be in store for a large number of draft picks going unsigned “accidentally on purpose” because GMs would rather have the corresponding pick next y...

Re: Hall of Fame Veteran's Committee

But if you have players outside the Hall who are obviously significantly better than a number of players inside, what does a Hall of Fame even mean? The real-world HOF had this problem around 1950, when the ballot was severely bloated and guys like Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx and Bill Terry were getting pa...

Re: Hall of Fame Veteran's Committee

I need to go back and reread part of the Bill James book about the Hall of Fame…. They had the same problem we’re having.
