Waiver Claims Decimates Depth
Garcia Extended, Still Hobbled

In the detritus of what was once known as the 2034 baseball season, the BBA league office noted that the Nine have lost two players to the waiver wire: infielder Bill Benson (5/6/5/5/5 Talents) went to the Charm City Organization, and pitcher Carlos Rivera (6/7/8 Talents) to the Loserville Sluggers. [Yes, they may be a Johnson League team in a bit, but they’ll always be Loserville in our hearts.]

Both players were being removed from the Nine’s 40-man rosters.

“We’re not surprised to lose these guys, especially to lose them to competitive franchises,” said GM Ron Collins. “Both Bill and Carlos are quality players. They just didn’t fit with us right now.”

Benson saw time as a utility player in a few appearances with the big club. He’s a solid second baseman, and good speed. He saw 154 plate appearance with the Nine, and leaves in hopes to find brighter pastures. “I think I can start at the top level,” he said earlier this year. “I’d like to get that chance.” At 27, he may be getting past the time he gets that chance, but the team and the fans both wish him well.

Rivera (28) has been a classic AAAA pitcher for the Nine. He’s a right handed junkballer with a reasonable repertoire and who keeps the ball on the ground. He started three games in 2033, finishing with a dubious 9.00 ERA in 16 innings. He’s always been quite successful as a starter in AAA, however (12-8, 4.32 last season), and some are expecting the Sluggers to give Rivera a shot out of the bullpen in 2035.

GARCIA ‘SETBACK” CONCERNS ANYONE INTELLIGENT
But Not Nine Management

This week, the team announced a two-season extension for center fielder Carlos Garcia (5/8/6/9/3 Talents). At 28, Garcia is still a serviceable outfielder, but he had hamstring problems that ended his 2034 season in the playoffs, and within hours of announcing Garcia’s extension the team also noted that its medical staff says the speedster’s issues have not gotten any better.

So the question has to be asked.

Are the Nine’s front office insane?

They gave Garcia $3.6M in 2035, and a $4.0M mutual option in 2036. But Garcia’s entire value is in his ability to get on base (he walks a lot), and steal (he runs a lot, too). If his wheels are a mess, that’s $7.6M possibly tossed into the drink. What the hell is Collins thinking? Or, better asked, is Collins thinking? Or is he just deluding himself that the team’s embarrassing loss at the hands of Omaha was really smoke and mirrors (to steal a phrase currently in the culture)?

Sigh.

Rivera was obtained to distract Brett from more valuable Sluggers in expansion draft

That’s right, the title stays with the Louisville franchise
