I might have spent a mere few weeks in this cupboard compared to my umpteen million years in the MBBA, MBWBA and the BBA but I feel I’ve probably learnt more in this time.

In my early days, in 1995, with the reformed Omaha Barnstormers I knew precious little about baseball. I had spent a decade or so watching baseball on TV but that is not knowing baseball. The men attempt to hit the ball, they attempt to run round the bases and they attempt to win but how does the GM affect that? How do you build the team, what makes a good player, what makes a good pitcher and how does it all fit together? It was probably the reason I was very flakey in the early days, it was like blundering about in the dark trying to set up my teams and the results showed that. I’ve learnt over the years the basics of it all but still struggle with the concept of value and trading as it’s so alien to the European way. All we do is lay down the cash and the players ours lol. There’s no need to worry what the selling team wants or how it values your players or their players.

It’s been intense in this cupboard though, by day I read the Genius’s notes on winning baseball and the history books of league while by night I put in my earphones and listen to fine podcasts of other BBA GM’s espousing their methods and beliefs. It feels like being in one of these Sci-Fi pods being fed all the information and when I wake up and am released I will be a super GM and will win all set before me. The theory of it is so easy and no doubt so far from the truth as the 2035 season will prove.

I didn’t do so well with poor teams like Omaha, Twin Cities and Indy or with challengers like Baltimore, Phoenix or Chicago so it seems I can mess up any sort of team. I’m sure the whole league’s watching and waiting to see what sort of mess I can make of the ‘Genius Team’ but my finest hour was the five years I had in Atlantic City. All we can do is wait and see . . . . .

[I hope all you heathens recognize the literary reference in the title lol)

Hopefully The Genius doesn't Forget to let you out of there when he leaves for Wichita.
