GREENWOOD, AYALA LEAD SURFERS TO GEOGHEGAN VICTORY

October 11, 2034
Long Beach, CA

Fog machines and full-length mirrors adorned the home clubhouse at Vito Costantino Memorial Stadium this evening, standing out like sore thumbs from the usual backdrop of plastic lined lockers and tubs full of champagne and beer. The club has embraced the moniker given to them by podcasters and bloggers around the nation as they won 94 regular season games and made a strong run for the Frick Pacific title.

Jesus Ayala, of legal drinking age for only 4 months was the star of the night. The former first round draft pick made his big league debut on Independence Day 2034 and proved that he belonged throughout the summer. Tonight though, he provided the fireworks. In front of 52,900 raucous fans, he hit two 2-run home runs off of California pitcher, and fellow rookie, Miguel Ramos. They were his second and third home runs of the short series, and his 8 RBIs led the team in the Goeghegan round.

Perhaps no one embodies the spirit of "Smoke and Mirrors" more that left handed starter Pepe Castillo. The 30 year old is pitching in his fourth BBA season and has a career ERA of 3.41. He was not perfect against California, with a 4.22 ERA over 10.2 innings, but he did enough to keep the Surfers in both games that he pitched. To the frustration of many, Castillo pitches above his ratings of 6/7/8 by keeping hitters off balance with his arsenal of breaking and offspeed pitches.

While Ayala and Castillo may have been the stories of Game 5, perhaps the best story of the series is Jimmy Greenwood. The ace righty appeared in the playoffs in '29, '30 and '31 before suffering late season injuries in '32 and '33 forcing the Surfers to compete in the playoffs without him. Greenwood started Game 1 and Game 4 against the Crusaders, and absolutely dominated them. In the two starts, he allowed just 1 run on 10 hits, walking none and striking out 6 over 11.1 innings.

Surfers management was careful to manage pitch counts for the 28 year old this season, though he did set a career high in innings pitched. Only twice did he throw 100 pitches in a game, and never more than that. It appears to be working out so far, as the team has won their first playoff series since their 2029 Landis Championship.

A Doubleday date against the Louisville Sluggers awaits on Friday the 13th. Will the Smoke and Mirrors continue to confound their opponents? Or will the FL Heartland champions continue on to the Cartwright Cup?

I gotta say I love the way you have latched onto the smoke and mirrors thing. Makes me all warm and fuzzy.

I think it would have been great. Being upset means you care. What’s wrong with that?

reminds me of the (real life) 2005 world series with my white sox.

Game 1: asskicking
game 2: walk-off HR
game 3: longest game in WS history that features a starter coming out after a few drinks to get a save
game 4: 1-0 with only run scored on a ball that didnt leave the IF

o trust me, i know... It is basically a running joke at this point how many times ESPN has forgotten it in various graphics. That playoffs run (11-1 by the way) also featured something i feel confident we will never see again. In the ALCS the sox threw complete games in games 2-5, and in game 1 the starter went 8 1/3.
