Indy had some pretty big question marks in it’s bullpen last season which lingered over to this season but the team which is coming off a 5-1 stretch against Louisville & The Yellow Springs Nine, hardly needed the bullpen at all in the past week.

That is much thanks to the Starting Pitchers being able to go deep into games and putting up a very modest 3.17 Team ERA in the past week.

Mike Bailey started 2 games this week, and pitched 15 innings between them, good for an average of 7.5 in each inning meaning the bullpen had to come in and close it down for roughly an inning each game. That close down happened to be from Reynaldo Garza who pitched 4 innings this past week and had a 2.25 ERA.

Joe Clements went 9 complete innings in his start, allowing 3 runs, but with an opponent batting average of .161 he simply seemed to be unlucky in allowing any.

Fernando Pacheco needed to have a good week after a rough start to the season. His 8 inning, 3 runs allowed performance will give him what he needed to get back on track.

Domingo Castillo went 8 innings as well allowing 4 earned runs and striking out 6. Although one would hope for a better outing next time, that is technically a “quality start” at a 4.50 ERA.

All eyes were on the newcomer this week and he delivered. 8 innings of 3 run ball for Jose Reyes in his first BBA start.

It’s worth noting that the only other bullpen member that was used this past week besides Reynaldo Garza and that was setup man Millard McCoy who pitched 2 scoring innings otherwise, it was a clean week for the bullpen.

In order for Indy to continue the early success they are having, they are going to need many more quality starts like the ones they received this week from their pitching staff in order to compete in the tough Heartland Division of the Frick League.
