There weren’t many “experts” who trusted the Hawks heading into their playoff opening series against Yellow Springs Nine. After all, The Nine won 98 games this past year and missed out on a division crown by 1 game, while Omaha’s club rode a sling-shot into the playoffs by winning 8 games in a row before winning a forced winner-take-all game 163 against Twin Cities.

Omaha knew in order to win the series, they couldn’t afford to slip up at home. They came through with a 2-0 start to the series, before dropping Game 3 in Yellow Springs.

Game 4 however, was all about Omaha. They drove in 13 runs, leaving the Frick League’s best bullpen a commanding lead to hold onto.

“Things are going to get crazy in Omaha for the Doubleday Series. The fans are going to be behind us 100%, we know that” said Aymeric Barajas (7/8/6/7/7 Ratings, .248/.350/.409, 14 HR, 58 RBI) who was named MVP of the series.

“We got ahead early in the game just as we needed to, and were able to take that lead and hold onto it.” Said Hawks manager Quentin Richardson, who was promoted mid-season into the role.

“Even as the last pitch was thrown, it was never “coasting” to the end of the game. This team can score runs in a hurry as demonstrated by their top ranking in runs this season. We wanted to make sure that we didn’t wake the sleeping giant by allowing baserunners.” Said 20 year old Carson Stoller (9/8/7 Ratings, 4 - 2, 3.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 27 K) who started the clinching Game 4 in the series.

Something cool happened in this game however that shouldn’t be looked past.

Some members of the media questioned whether or not Joe Clements (9/6/5 Ratings, 10 - 13, 5.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 110 K) should actually start against Yellow Springs as he has pitched very well in his career against them. Clements has been with the club throughout the rebuilding process, and actually lost his starting rotation spot earlier this season.

He did not get the start as Carson Stoller (9/8/7 Ratings, 4 - 2, 3.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 27 K) took the mound and lasted 8 2/3 innings. What did happen however, is for the final out of the game, the team sent Joe Clements (9/6/5 Ratings, 10 - 13, 5.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 110 K) to the mound. He finished the game out for the Hawks, clinching the series. A perfect ending for the game for the fans in Omaha who have grown to love Clements and a nice moment for Clements.

When that final pitch was thrown by Joe Clements (9/6/5 Ratings, 10 - 13, 5.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 110 K), and the final out recorded, Omaha fans rejoiced while Yellow Springs Nine fans sat in shock.

Omaha now will play the Calgary Pioneers in the best of 7 Doubleday series. Calgary had a buy in the Geoghegan Round after winning their division with 98 wins.

The series begins on the 13th of October and will start with 2 games at Calgary, followed by 3 games in Omaha, and finishing with 2 more in Calgary.

Not only was this a prime example of the playoff randomizer, its a prime example of how not to schedule a 5 game series.

But that said, congrats. Next round will be interesting.
