No expansion worries here. Might be the only silver lining to being a bad club. Want Mike Davis? He's yours, even though he did have a ratings bump before his latest injury. Want Pedro Hernandez? We'll buy his flight. How about Jorge Sierra or Mike Barnett? You get the point. All of these guys will definitely be left unprotected. There are a few not so obvious guys though.

Rich Ayers

While only 26, Ayers has a salary that keeps climbing and climbing. A classic "hits better than his ratings suggest" kind of guy, Ayers has been a favorite of mine since he was called up. Having another nice season with a line of .297/.351/.490 with 13 HR and 58 RBI, he's been real solid for the last 4 seasons. With guys like Benton Allen, Michael Durham, Gerbrand de Best and such, it makes it a tough decision on what I'll do. Right now I'm leaning toward protecting him.

Viacheslav Vasilyev

Vasilyev is another guy that I'm on the fence about. He's an average pitcher for sure, but he eats a lot of innings. Probably better suited at the bottom of the rotation, he's been forced into an upper tier role, and his 3-19 record may show that. A season ago he was 13-8 with a 3.99 ERA, so he can do the job I think. He's signed pretty cheap for the next four, so that will help him. I'm still on the fence though.

Michael Durham

Durham is coming back from a significant injury after finally figuring it out last season. I should really protect him, but the injury bug has me thinking about exposing him. When healthy he appears to be an above average player, it's just that he hasn't produced for a whole season. I'll probably end up protecting him.

The rest of the roster is really a no brainer. There is a clear cut line of good and bad that will become a bit more muddy as we move forward. My goal is that by the time we go to 32 teams I'll have some tough calls to make. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, not sure why they look like that now.
