Will Buckets of Cash Make Team Attractive?

Despite having been jostled temporarily off the top of the heap by the Wolves on the field, the Yellow Springs Nine have remained a winning force at the box office. Earlier this week, the team announced it has surpassed last season’s revenue stream even before any playoff appearance is added in.

“That was our expectation,” said GM Ron Collins at a gala luncheon where he was standing in for absent owner John Little. “Of course we want to win, but everyone on our staff understands that baseball is a for-profit endeavor. We intend to run a cash-positive every year.”

The news was music to some fan’s ears. A horde of Nine followers took to social media to speculate that Collins’s words were targeted to a potential buyer. “You know RC hates working for ‘Liddle Boy’ as much as we hate handing him our wallets,” one blast said.

Much has been made of the club’s reported profit margin, with a focus on the cost side (coming mostly from the loss of free agent Eduardo Lopez), but the fact is that the team’s season ticket revenue jumped from $21M to nearly $34M. All total, the team has raked in $133.7M this year. Playoff revenue could add $4M-$20M on top of that.

“I don’t know if we can keep topping the revenue total every season, but certainly we can keep returning money to anyone who might want to invest in us,” Collins said. “John (Little) has always been clear on that goal, and I suppose that would be the goal for anyone in that seat.”
